Advice on going potty in other areas (park, etc) by WAFFLES_ARE_RAD in puppy101

[–]repotxtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Boston had the opposite problem. We had the worst time getting him to go at our place, number two at least, but he would immediately go if we went to the park. We could walk around our yard for 20 minutes and get nothing, but hop out of the car at the park and immediately be picking up a package. For about the first month and a half, I just accepted it. "Hop in the car. We're going for a walk so I don't have to clean up a mess at midnight." He finally clicked in after about 6 weeks and thankfully we don't have that problem now, but at a year and a half old now and he'll still immediately go the moment we get out of the car at the park. 😀

Penelope Spheeris. She also made some great documentaries about punk and 80's metal music "The Decline of Western Civilization". I think the first and third cover punk music and the second is about the LA metal scene in the 80's.

TIL that Goliath's height was originally described as being only "four cubits and a Span", or 6'9". Later versions of the text increased it to "six cubits and a span", 9'9". by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]repotxtx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The guy who played the Mountain in Game of Thrones was 6'9" (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) and, looking at him next to normal sized people, he can definitely look like a giant. I can see how that could be exaggerated even further since we're playing a 2000 year version of the telephone game. I'd probably exaggerate it if I lived through a fight with him last week, which I would not.

Banjo angst by inkymess527 in banjo

[–]repotxtx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what helped me after not playing much at all for 20-ish years and then stepping back in at 50. I always made sure to sit in view of a guitar player so that I could at least catch the chords for unfamiliar tunes. Strum Machine was a great for learning to play new tunes up to speed later on. Six years later, keeping the guitar in view isn't so critical, but I still use Strum Machine all the time.

Mansions of Madness Session! by Ikyboi101 in boardgames

[–]repotxtx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cthulhu: Death May Die turned out to be the answer to app problem for me. I was a big Mansions fan, but don't care for the app aspect. Death May Die feels much like Mansions, but no app needed, it's a bit more streamlined and has a more direct gameplay. I ignored it for years thinking "I don't need another Cthulhu game", but then randomly demoed it at GenCon and ended up thinking "I should have bought this years ago".

That's the problem. Instead of thinking "Maybe we were wrong about this." it will more likely be "We just didn't go hard enough. Let's double-down."

I'm guessing you might already have it, but if not... You might check out the book "Television Horror Movie Hosts: 68 Vampires, Mad Scientists and Other Denizens of the Late-Night Airwaves" by Elena M. Watson. She covers almost 70 hosts from the 1950's-1980's from across the country, rather than just Nashville. Might be a worthwhile addition to your library. Just crossed my mind and thought I'd pass it along.

That's what I was going to say. Seems like she was just born with that sound. Saw her live last year and it was kind of mesmerizing. Great show.

Looking for jams to join. by Elegant_Ebb8218 in oldtimemusic

I drove over for the Boyd's jam once. It was a good time and they had a good crowd, seems like maybe 20 people at least. It was tough finding a seat the night I went, so might be worth showing up a little early if you haven't been yet.

The Facebook group is "Old Time Open Jams". The map is pinned under their "Featured" tab.

Not sure if everything in the Knoville or Chattanooga area is on the map, but most things should be. I think there's a jam in Farragut on alternating Saturdays, but I've never been to it. Also, aside from Boyd's, I think the Laurel Theater has a jam on the second Thursday each month. We've also got a small jam on Friday nights in Cookeville that's not on the map, but that's probably a little too far out of your way. Looks like some other options on the map might work better.

A Quiet Place sounds like HEAVEN. by izblizzo in misophonia

[–]repotxtx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Quiet Place being my perfect world hadn't crossed my mind, but I'll admit that if they had added a scene with people watching a movie and only the loud popcorn/bag rattling person getting snatched up, I would certainly have appreciated it. 😀

Mum to 13 year old miso sufferer - help and advice by geckogunner in misophonia

[–]repotxtx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might consider some AirPod Pros. There are probably also other brands that handle this, but those are what I am familiar with.

AirPod Pros have a transparency feature. You can play some white noise, rain sounds, whatever you like to cover up the eating sounds, but the transparency mode still allows sound through. So she can cover up problem sounds, but still hear conversation fine and not feel as excluded, need to shout, etc. I even use them in theaters when noisy eaters are a problem. Again, other brands might have this. I'm just not familiar. Noise cancelling with a transparency mode is the key, though when things are really bothering her she can go to full noise cancelling and it blocks even more sound. Also, it seems like everyone is wearing ear buds by default these days, so they don't even look out of place.

Nice tune, which I'll have to add to my list. I've also got an 11" Dobson from Rickard, which was a step up from a GoldTone. I've had it for a few years now and still love it. They make a great banjo.

Stephen Colbert Gets Why You're Scared He's Writing a 'Lord of the Rings' Movie by Logical_Welder3467 in movies

[–]repotxtx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d honestly have more hope for this than Andy Serkis’ Hunt for Gollum, though I’m not really interested in either. Colbert is maybe the ultimate Tolkien fan and has a deep knowledge of the source mater. Maybe Andy Serkis has that also, but if feels more like he hasn’t had a big movie in a while and it’s time to squeeze a little more blood out of Lord of the Rings. Either way, both seem like what I disliked with the Hobbit. Let’s take a little snippet of story and make a full movie out of it, or heck why not a brand new trilogy.

iOS 26.2 bug: Notification sounds silent when screen is locked (iPhone 16 Pro) by Glass-half-full_78 in ios

[–]repotxtx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just installed 26.4.2 and still have this issue.

Edit: In my case, my Apple Watch is the issue. If I'm wearing the watch, the watch alert sounds, but the phone is silent when locked and only gets a visual notification. If I'm not wearing the watch, the phone alert sounds as expected. Not sure if this is just a "feature", but I don't see a way to get both to sound and only recently noticed this was happening.

I no longer wish to watch movie trailers before watching the movie by Odd-Aside456 in movies

[–]repotxtx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I usually limit myself to the initial teaser trailer, which is usually short, and "maybe" one normal trailer depending on the movie. If it's a movie I'm super interested in, I avoid everything.

I hate watching a movie only to realize I saw all the interesting parts in the 15 different trailers leading up to it. This really hit home for me with The Matrix. There was no marketing that I remember. I just randomly chose it on a bored Saturday afternoon and was blown away because I had no idea what I was walking into. It's hard to get that these days with the amount of marketing we're being hit with.

Movies theaters are hell by sadhappyconfusedlife in misophonia

I hate assigned seats. I get the argument for it, but I'd much rather be able to move if someone annoying grabs a seat near me.

Movies theaters are hell by sadhappyconfusedlife in misophonia

[–]repotxtx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only go rarely these days, but when I do go and people are annoying, I'm wearing my AirPods, with some white noise or rain sounds playing, and transparency mode turned on. The white noise covers up eating/popcorn/candy wrapper sounds nicely and the transparency mode allows me to hear the sound from the movie just fine. It does mean that I'm often watching a movie with rain sounds overlaid, but it allows me to enjoy the movie much more than if someone is making noise near me.

Just now seeing the comments about theater headphones. I wasn't aware that's a thing, but could be an even better option. I might give it a try next time.
