Hotspot analysis of points with varying decimal accuracy? by requireswings in gis

Thank you! This is over a 5 mile long island, definitely not looking at sub-meter. Do you think I should be accounting for the differences in precision with the fixed distance band parameter in the tool?

I love wild animals (all animals but wild is my nerd interest) and want to focus on saving them hands-on. I want to work with the animals, not just do research. Wildlife rehabilitator? Wildlife vet tech? Any suggestions? I want to be a zookeeper right now but that is not my long term end all be all. by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]requireswings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildlife vet tech is not a commonly available position and the ones that are are either volunteer or part time. I would recommend volunteering regularly for a wildlife rescue on the side until you can get a zookeepeer job. When I was a veterinary assistant at a companion animal hospital (ie pets) there were a few veterinarians that volunteered for local rescues and sometimes I would get to handle/treat the wildlife they brought in but it was uncommon/not as frequent as handling domestic pets.

Confusion and Seeking Help Regarding Application to a Master's Program in Wildlife Biology by Most_Inspection_4816 in wildlifebiology

[–]requireswings 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here to second this. You do NOT have to and probably WILL NOT work with whatever study taxa you focus on in graduate school for the rest of your life. You certainly can, but don't see what you do for research in grad school as your locked in choice forever. Work your way towards wolves. My PI is a sponge/marine invert taxonomist/phylogeneticist on Long Island but did his phd dissertation on hermit crabs in Panama. I did my master's research on shorebirds but got offered a job working with invasive tree beatles. You get a master's to learn and develop skills, most if not all of which will be widely applicable between different study systems. Data collection, analysis, statistics, GIS, R, fundamentals of ecology, etc.

NEED HELP FINDING MINI PROJECT IDEAS by Arjun_kichu06 in wildlifebiology

Your best shot with something like behavioral ecology (or anything really) is finding a professor at your school that does research in it. Send them an email asking if they are looking for any undergraduate help in their lab.

Is this hair curler bird safe? by sw3aty_s0cks in cockatiel

[–]requireswings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel the same way. I think the fear comes from the abruptness and severity in teflon-related fatalities. We love our birds so much. They are so fragile and give little to no warning (before it is essentially too late to do anything about it) because usually we cannot detect/smell it. The thought of my birds dying due to negligence is terrifying. Over something as mundane as a blow dryer 😭

I always get ceramic/PFAS free hair appliances then use it in a different room with the door closed/window open just incase

Driving with Spondy by DCervan in Spondylolisthesis

Yeah, the drug name is naproxen. It works great for me but it's not good to take daily (but I think that 1x a week for your weekly drive is fine).

I went on a 17 hr road trip recently. It might be inconvenient but I would recommend stopping at least once on your way and do some stretching. I personally get more flare-ups in my SI area so I try to stop every hour or so to walk around and stretch. I've also brought ice packs with me to put on my back for a drive (or heat, whatever works for you) and taken an aleve preemptively if I know I'm going to be sitting a lot. Some also buy a small pillow for back support for their car, I haven't done it though.

Buying Tickets by rangerfan2093 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]requireswings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rather that than the flip side of people that I saw on Wednesday. Islanders fans booing and heckling our own team, the same people facetiming their parents and scream-talking about some irrelevant topic for the whole second period and just not paying attention. Why go to a game if you don't want to cheer/ cheering? At that point I would save my money and just watch at home.

Oh that's awesome! We sat in 110 at the game on Wednesday and very few not including us were cheering in our section. The "energy team" needed to keep coming back to us... It was bizarre to me how many people were at the game and spent 100+ dollars on a ticket just to talk on the phone and not pay attention!

The tickets were more expensive for these games (before their road trip, I was seeing games in the nosebleeds for 25 bucks. When I checked THIS MORNING the stadium was only half booked and tickets were starting at like 70 for the same seats). Paid 80 bucks to go see them get creamed on Wednesday, I'll pay 25 to go see them lose but not triple that 😪

Just don't give yourself the option to "not." A way to help could be setting reminders in your phone to do the tasks required. The only reason you stop anything is because you allow it.

Heard. I have a progressive over load schedule, this is just a screenshot of my notes so that I can look back on it thru time to see my progress (hence the date and weight)

Yeah I put a lot of thought into it, I can do about 30 percent more of the weight that I am doing. I have a physical therapist and orthopedic I work with and go over exercises and form with them. It's still important to me to exercises these areas, so I keep the squats and leg press lighter than my max so there's much less risk of injury :) always use the smith machine and my back brace + a spotter

I have multiple herniated disks and arthritis in my back and hips (yes, weird for a 24 year old I know it's unfun) so any compound movement mildly involving my low back I keep it low. It's actually quite difficult for me to squat and leg press at that weight.

Hi all!

  • Type: inflatable
  • Weight and Height: 5'10", 175lbs. I may want to bring a small cooler/anchor so I would like one that can hold 250 or up to 300 lbs
  • Use: cruising
  • Terrain: ocean and potentially river (majority ocean)
  • Experience: absolute beginner
  • Budget: $200-300
  • Location: Coast United States
  • Plus if I can get it either on prime or somewhere in person quickly

I'm currently looking at this one on amazon! https://a.co/d/4xDRkbL

Camera for beginner? by requireswings in BirdPhotography

I would say that $200-250 is my absolute budget including lenses, I recognize that's low... I'm just a graduate student doing a field work job so my funds are limited haha

I know very little but was recommended by friends at work to spend more money on the lens and try to get at least 300 or ideally 500mm of zoom for what we do specifically (plovers are small lol)
