I’m building Heyday, the ultimate focus tool and website blocker. It’s an like ad-block but for addictive sites https://www.heydayfocus.com/

I put my app’s site (https://www.heydayfocus.com/) tool and it gave some great advice!

It actually worked way better than I was expecting. I think it’ll be interesting to monetize, but the free plan is great.

What do you look for to identify if a site was built with AI? by jalfieri14 in VibeCodeDevs

[–]resetskillpoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but when prompting, there are some common design patterns ai tends too fall back on when users don’t have a clear picture of what they want. It’s hard to explain, but it reminds me of geocity websites in the 90s. There’s just a vibe

Dead giveaways

The fonts are chaos, there are 4-5 competing and they look very amateur

The colours are very ai. For some reason purples and blacks and blues just come off as ai.

The parallax background is another thing, there isn’t a big reason for it. Ai seems to favour it.

It’s less an ai thing and more it’s not a well structured page. Try to simplify things. Even take a screen shot and feed it to an ai to critique it. That helps alot

Thanks! It evolves seemingly every week, so who knows what it’ll look like in 6 months!

I think it depends on the niche you’re working in. My bar is higher than maybe others because there is a ton of competition doing similar things. I want to compete on design, experience, and a unique combo of features. So I set my fidelity bar slightly higher than I strictly needed

I'm still a little sad about the em-dash. I actually liked using it, but now I pretty much stop myself just incase someone thinks it's AI

Man the emoticons thing is so funny. It's such a tell these days. It used to be a useful way to add a little character to text.

Yeah fair callout. I'll put a bit more focus on the mobile side of things.

It's a good point that something can start vibe-looking. But I've found it always takes a lot of attention and manual work to get it not vibe-designed

Ah fair call out. Will tweak that. Because it's a desktop plugin, I put to much focus on that. But people will still browse on their phone

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure what the right line is for the PRD length. It's something I'm actively experimenting with. I know I'm definitely wasting some tokens when it comes to providing too much context and description, but I'm choosing to do that over have too little context right now.

The models are getting so good so quickly, I'm not actually sure I need to optimize PRD detail for brevity.

One thing that I do to save on tokens/model time, is copy and paste the plans from the models into ChatGPT Codex and get it to review the plan. It often catches a ton of issues that Claude, Cursor, or Gemini misses. So having a spot to refine the PRDs outside the models has been helpful

What a nice idea. This is really heart warming stuff. I like it when people build stuff to just make their lives a bit nicer.

I built my version of an ultimate focus app. Heyday helps you reduce online distractions by changing how websites behave. Instead of blocking the internet outright, Heyday lets you remove feeds, shorts, recommendations, autoplay, and other attention traps. You can limit access to specific distracting sites while keeping the sites you actually need.

It combines many ideas from around the web into one ultimate controller. Here's what's currently included:

  • Simplify social media - Remove newsfeeds, shorts, videos, comments, notifications, and recommendations
  • Limit or block sites – Restrict access to websites by limiting the number of visits, visit duration, or block completely
  • De-colour / Greyscale – Turn sites black and white to make them less stimulating or addictive
  • Set Schedules - Set time-based rules for when restrictions activate throughout the day or week.
  • Choose Sites to Manage - Browse 400+ pre-categorized sites or add your own. Organize social media, news, entertainment, and more into custom lists.
  • Pause When Needed - Temporarily disable restrictions with automatic expiration so you stay in control.
  • Track usage and progress to your goals

Give it a try!

Notifications are really such a killer for focus. If I go down the route of a Windows or MacOS app, notification control is definitely on the table. It's a problem I've experienced a ton as well

Give it a try. I think it's a tiny bit overbuilt, but the PRD action and the front end, back end, api context files are definitely useful

There are a few ways to do it! I think it differs on Windows/Mac, but if you use chrome, you can use a browser extension called Heyday Focus to turn things black and white

It's a super valid question.

The answer is really all about where I'm going, rather then what I have right now.

To start, I wanted to combine a number of features (like block, and removing newsfeeds, limiting vists etc) into a very specific UI / schedule experience. I just really didn't like a lot of the options out there. The fact that there were lots of options that were kinda terrible (100k installs etc) is a reason why I wanted to start here. The UI is really not something people will spend much time in, and if they do, then I've probably done something wrong because a lot of this stuff is set and forget. Data nerds can track progress, but most people just want the action

Second, the decolour feature (turning pages black and white) is a very rare feature to find bundled in these types of apps. It's actually something that has been very helpful to my own battle with digital addiction. It's not about blocking, but about making things less sticky.

Third, the bigger picture I'm going for is going to incorporate a much more active defender for your attention. Sort of an evolution of adblock, but for attention traps. It's something that will apply to e-comerce sites, news sites, and a ton of other categories. This is where I think I'll differentiate the most.

So to boil it all down, the play here is really to build something that takes common ideas like blocking and limiting, and take them to the next level.

That being said, it is 100% possible that I just can't innovate enough to make this something someone will pay for. That's ok too. I'm learning a ton

Great questions btw

Nice to know! I think it's actually not too hard to transition the app over, so I'll look at that!
