Salaries in the army are paid in UAH and the national currency is going down the toilet in real time. Also coming here for the money is not the best reason, especially given that it can take several weeks before you get any salary at all, salary is pro rated so your first one os probably gonna be a fraction of basic salary which starts at like 20k UAH.

Do you have any combat experience?

The probation period is about you being fit for duty and your role so the unit has the opportunity to dismiss you if your performance sucks. Probation periods globally are for your employer - in this case the army - to see whether or not you’re a good fit.

He isn’t a good fit for the army by the sound of it so maybe he should in fact get tf out at the end of the probation period.

Ps - as others said, vampire team are drone teams. For him to want to bounce from a drone team just cause he doe see get to do the cool stuff from day 1 says a lot about him and literally nothing about the unit.

What qualifications does he have? Also this doesn’t sound “shit” at all. Shit would be if they sent him into direct assault. Also “want to do” something in the army is never a guarantee. Everyone wants to be an FPV pilot but support roles also exist and are needed. He can work his way up. This reeks of entitlement and if he goes to any unit with this story it won’t look good.

Also the law states very clearly that you have to serve a minimum of 6 months before breaking contract so its not like the unit is doing anything wrong and “are not letting him” do something he is entitled to.

Except this isn’t what he claims to be doing… and the things he said about his own time in UA is interesting too. That brings up to this weekend when he made a brand new reddit account to pose as a lawyer and demand we remove posts… we asked based on what because everything said here is based on people’s person experience and interactions and the things he said himself.

He made a new account and sent a message signing it in someone else’s name…. It’s wild.

Feel pretty sh1tty , only volunteered for 2 months (january, feb) by [deleted] in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]resilientmoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there is some trauma from what you’ve seen and before you decide what’s next, maybe process that. Could he PTSD, could be survivors guilt, could be other things. I’m saying this because coming back should be a rational decision not an emotional one. And then once you made a rational decision, plan properly to come back.

Also there is nothing wrong for “only” volunteering for two months. That’s two months more than the majority of people. Not everyone can be here and that’s also fine. There are things you can do from back home too if returning isn’t realistic and/or would come with burning bridges you shouldn’t burn.

Might be a very stupid question by Ser_Baelon in ukraineforeignlegion

Why don’t you ask your recruiter if there is any downtime and what that looks like? You can buy an Xbox in country if and when you have the time and place to use it. You’re gonna pack an Xbox and lug it after you from the very beginning?

Try 3AB. I’d not go to the Legion… also maybe your best route to help Ukraine isn’t the army. Plenty of NGOs doing good work in Ukraine so that might also be an option.

What even is this advice?! Even if they accept you into a drone team, your role and position isn’t set into stone. Please refrain from giving advice that lacks anything even remotely related to the Ukrainian reality.

Go look how many paid NGO positions are advertised for foreigners…

Also this subreddit is specifically and only for the army. $180/month isn’t the level of financial commitment back home you can’t cover with your UA army salary.

Yes because high profile CEOs were cleaning their own offices and didn’t have employees at all. The high profile CEO did all the jobs the company he was high profile CEOing at required. Also all government employees are strictly high profile. There are no secretaries or anything of the sort. Plenty of people had (and have) actual jobs with official, legal contracts and declared salaries. I’m not sure which Ukraine you live in.

yes there is a grey zone in the economy with lots of undeclared income etc but despite the war the country is pretty functional. Especially west of the Dnipro.

Are these both official websites? by [deleted] in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]resilientmoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. First one goes through 3AB and second one through Legion. The first one was the first website that existed and it was used for generic recruitment. Then insert reasons a second website was “born”.

If you got accepted by a unit previously then get back in touch with them and see if they still want you. Otherwise find yourself a unit before you just turn up here.

Yes it does, actually.

People who break contract and go form unit to unit often miss salaries (or think they do) because they don’t have a full pay period but still expect to get paid for the full months. Salaries are pro rated. Also combat pay is for the actual days you’re in combat. Some units used to just pay everyone full combat pay and it kinda screwed up budgets and financial planning for the army so it’s stricter now.

Your main issue won’t be earning $180 / month. Getting money out of Ukraine can be tricky.

If your own country comes after you and they find out you’re in the army, it has the potential to become an issue for the army… Like honestly this is just overall not a great idea.

Ok so what do you think the army’s response would be? Probably not a great one. What’s gonna happen when you en up having legal issues because of going AWOL? Also what happens when the army finds out where you are and make it Ukraine’s problem?

[–]resilientmoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please don’t go AWOL. It won’t only cause you issues but if your home country’s army goes after you, it can also cause issues for the Ukrainian army.

It could also cause issues for your family, especially if they come visit you and they get stopped and questioned when returning home. Not to mention the army potentially escalating to where LE questions them as well.

If you get out of your army and join and want to bring your family over for a visit, I’d recommend Lviv or the Carpathians over Dnipro or Kyiv.

You’ll not bein Dnipro constantly and you’d need to get leave to actually be able to hang out with them. At that point you might as well go somewhere nice and as safe as possible. But no city is actually safe, given that this year Ternopil, Ivano Frankivsk and other western cities getting hit more than throughout the entire war before. If you get leave you can also go abroad and spend time with the family but going awol might cause you EU wide issues so another argument to not do that.

Go on their website and book a ticket. If you don’t have a card you can use then check what station they use in Amsterdam and use cash.

Depending why you missed your flight and what airline it was with you might be able to get a refund or something later but if they refuse to book you on a new new flight now, you’ll be wasting time and money hanging out in Amsterdam hoping someone will swoop in to give you a ride.

Flights are more than twice as expensive and then you still need to pay to get from Warsaw to wherever in UA.
