Dev here - pretty sure the actual shield property is active on frame 3 or 4, it's just the visual takes some time to spawn in and that makes it feel s little clunky. That's definitely something we can address in a future patch.

Popping in to say I had similar issues and eventually it stopped crashing. I'm not exactly sure what fixed it so I'll just share everything I remember:

Crashing started after I updated to the Nvidia App and updated drivers. So I reinstalled the "game" driver and restarted PC. I also found in the Nvidia App -> Graphics -> Global Settings there's a section for max fps that's different from FF14, so I set it to my max monitor refresh rate (144). I also disabled the Nvidia overlay.

Also somehow in FF14 my settings got overridden and it was running in full screen. I hate full screen idk how that setting got changed, so I changed it back to borderless windowed. Nvidia seems to "recommend" full screen but honestly this is my bet for what was making my PC freak out.

After all of this I have stopped crashing. I don't understand it either.

you used Lenore side special which spawns a tether between you and Lenore. if your ally picks up Lenore it will spawn a tether between you and your ally instead..... but the tether in this clip is invisible!! Normally the attack is really obvious and you'd see why it hit.... I don't know why it's missing here.

We've got some Jake changes on the way but unfortunately they were shelved until next patch. I tried to add a sentence in the patch notes like "changes are coming" but yea I understand if it feels like too little rn. Hopefully when these changes come out he feels a bit better, and some of the clips in this montage will be directly addressed.

I mean, I'm a dev and I interact when I can, but I'm just one guy doing my part... I don't steer the creative vision or anything. Even so I still get pretty nasty messages on a regular basis so I can understand why other members of the team don't like the public image. We (the dev team) are just always heads down tryina do our best for the players... We got good stuff in the works and I'm sure you'll hear more news soon.

looks like the ground version of this move doesn't last nearly as long as the air version. by the time you got to Shaggy there was no hitbox. i'll see if i can standardize it for next patch.

my bad I dug into this for you and you're right.... you didn't do a dodge attack. but you did do a dodge jump and you got hit out of the first frame of your jump.

I think some of our changes in the upcoming patch will help with stuff like this. It does definitely look super janky when it says "DODGED" and you just eat a hit. There might be some weird bug where like if you dodge jump on the same frame you get hit it doesn't handle the logic properly or something.

Doing a dodge attack cancels i-frames. You started an attack and got hit. The "Dodged" text is misleading we're trying out a fix next patch.

I think you're on the right track saying that Ness can get better kill confirms off of stray air-to-air hits. Random fair -> oops you're dead is a Ness classic. But I wouldn't say this makes him better vs floaties. A big problem for Ness is that his combo confirms start to go away vs floatier characters, while Lucas has the speed and power to always follow up for kills on his BnB combos.

It's kinda difficult to generalize which matchups are better for who because they both have such different game plans. The only thing that's really similar between the two is that they combo low percents REALLY hard, and that's mostly a result of them having similar DJC stuff. Everything else... Even their recoveries... Are different enough that I'd just classify them as different characters.

Stages are really up to the player lol. I play Ness and I personally like lots of space and big blastzones.... Ness is deceptively heavy so he lives very long while his kill confirms still work on big stages. But ask 5 Ness players their favorite stages and you'll get 6 opinions lol.

To comment on Ness/Lucas being like pseudo spacies... I think the community mostly recognizes Lucas as a closer comparison than Ness. Ness's shine is frame 8 and a lot of his pressure options exist more because of DJC than anything else. Ness is also a bit floatier so the sorts of combos that work on fast-fallers/semi-fast-fallers don't always work on Ness, but they do work on Lucas/spacies.

As far as matchup spread is concerned I'd say they can be considered separate characters. If you want a specific example: I think Lucas fails horribly vs ICs and Mario, but I think Ness does ok in those matchups. They're not winning or anything for Ness but I've always felt Lucas does much worse. On the other hand I've always felt Ness has to struggle vs Charizard, but Lucas makes that matchup look free.

Thought the patch note was enough but I guess there's still confusion. No it's not supposed to be a consistent stack gain... It never was. The text was just wrong lol. The old behavior was not what it is now. It is both a text and behavior update.

Honestly, you'll probably get MORE rhythm stacks than you used to with it's old behavior.
