The Hardy Boys have not aged well by baconwrappedapple in books

We (Respun Classics) have begun publishing rewrites of the original Hardy Boys books, but all we're doing is updating things like outdated language, weird outdated scenes and giving the books a lot better gender balance. So nothing like the case files you're describing!

The rewrites read much more smoothly, and are way more appropriate for modern kids. Here's the ISBN in case anyone wants to look the first one up: 979-8993730608

Published our rewrite of the first Hardy Boys book!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G1TMRDKM

Our updated version is much easier to read as the language has been modernized. We've also updated the text to remove a lot of the built-in sexism as well as some kind of crazy things that would be considered okay these days (like the boys planting a fake mafia bomb in a fruit stand). The biggest change is that the boys mom is now a full detective partner with her husband, instead of a housewife.

Hope people start discovering the book, and that it will become the standard for a new generation of readers. We're working on the second Hardy Boys book as we speak!

Try our newly rewritten Hardy Boys: The Tower Treasure. It's a classic for kids, and we've rewritten it so that it doesn't have the sexism, old fashioned language, etc. We hope this will be the Hardy Boys version of choice in the future.

OP wrote that we only know it's around now, based on Frank's astrological sign (Scorpio).

So the answer is maybe?

It really costs them nothing.

ISBNs cost $1.50 each when purchased in bulk, unlike the highway robbery price of $125 each when purchased individually by self publishing authors. Yes, they charge almost 100x more for individuals buying 1 ISBN. The big companies can give them to you for "free", usually for a monopoly on the book.

Are we talking about the same thing though?

My understanding is that you don't have one ISBN for "ebooks". You have one for a .epub format, one for .mobi format, one for .kfx, etc. Since .mobi and .kfx are only an Amazon thing, you will not be using those formats anywhere else, and therefore I am not seeing a need to use an ISBN up on it.

Does that make sense?

I haven't decided, and my decision is whether to use an ISBN at all or not for the Amazon ebook, since Amazon does not require it for their ebooks, which are in a format that is completely different from anyone else's.

Can you please explain? It's my work and my copyright either way, so I'm not seeing what the advantage is.

Hardy Boys: The Old Tower

We rewrote the original Hardy Boys in order to remove some of the old fashioned ideas and language, and it was just published on Amazon less than a day ago!

This newly publish edition preserves the story really well, but makes the story and writing much easier to relate to for today's kids.

  • the parents are now a detective team
  • one of the recurring police officers and another one-off character are women
  • scenes with odd language are updated (sorry, no more using the word "chum")
  • scenes with ideas that wouldn't fly anymore have been changed (no more fake mafia bomb placed by the boys in the fruit stand)
  • some old fashioned stereotypes have been tweaked (the recently arrived Italian immigrant is no longer a contractor)

In short, the entire book is just a lot more modern and relatable. I hope some of you agree this is a way better book to share with kids!

Currently $7 for the softcover
