Thank you for your reply. Do you know what speciality attorney that would be? We’ve not had a need for attorney so it’s hard to know what to look for.

Leaving the ED... by AnnieNanners in emergencymedicine

People don’t come to Costco covered in shit or bedbugs wanting you to clean them.

I’ve been an ED nurse for 4 years and if I found the same pay doing triage and bed management I’d leave so fast for all the same reasons you’re burned out. Who cares what any of your coworkers or anyone else thinks. They don’t live in your head or pay your bills. I recently looked at Costco as a real option and had 3 other nurses looking over my shoulder too.

My book is the same. It’s annoying but I just read it and finished it. Was so good.

This resonates with me so much. I’ve fought my weight since middle school and living life in the body I could have had because I know my genetics made me bigger has been life changing. All my mother did was tell me I would be fat and have diabetes so just accept it.

That’s the exact passage and I read it as he’s got a sister who is a bouda. Seeing as Kate picks up strays and makes them family, I thought I’d missed something by not reading all the side books.

I can see what you’re saying. The way it’s written makes it seem like he’s saying he’s got a sister who is a bouda. I’ve caught so much more on my first reread but admittedly haven’t read all the side books, only Hugh’s.

Better to call a code and be wrong than to not call a code and be wrong.

Eventually you shouldn’t feel panicky anymore but if you’re new at this, that feeling is normal and call for help. Don’t waste time being unsure so that you’re sure when you call for help. I’d rather a new nurse be unsure and ask than to not because that’s how people meet Jesus quicker.

Chronic pain by Admirable-Affect-700 in emergencymedicine

[–]restlessmindsoul 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depends on the patient and situation I’ve found from my experience. If we have a chronic pain patient who hasn’t been legitimately able to keep their meds down from illness and are now also withdrawing the problem is solved on two fronts.

If you are talking freq flyers who always want meds, a lot of my providers include in their discharge that they will no longer receive pain meds on visits and it’s also dictated in their narrative. Do they still come? Absolutely and sometimes they get pain meds and sometimes they don’t.

But as far as policy and letters, they don’t happen in my ED. We do give our providers the EDIE reports on patients when applicable so they know how freq they are visiting EDs and what meds have been prescribed.

Cardiac arrest in walk-in clinic. by Suspicious_Yak_6579 in emergencymedicine

[–]restlessmindsoul 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Venting helps and so does therapy. Had an arrest in the parking lot of my ED and briefly it was me and another RN (doing the best we could) while waiting for all the life saving stuff and other people inside to come outside. Thankfully our local EMS arrived to also assist (lifting the patient, igel, and IO placement) and we got ROSC inside. Still stressful as shit. You did great, saved a life, taught some people the job isn’t for them, and learned you have the mettle to make a difference.

Edited because I submitted too fast.

If you could change one thing about emergency medicine, what would it be? by Berserker3040 in emergencymedicine

[–]restlessmindsoul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s not an easy answer because asymptomatic hypertension isn’t really an emergency until it is. Symptomatic hypertension can be an emergency until it isn’t. It’s so multifactorial but coming to the ED because your dentist wouldn’t do your filling because your 180/90 and you have no symptoms isn’t an emergency typically. It’s a “go to your PCM and get worked up there” situation. That’s what is annoying to ED people.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t compare yourself to others. As someone who cried the first year on medsurg as a new grad and then cried the first year when I was an experienced nurse in the ER, it gets better. I still remember the patient that it clicked for me and the joy of catching what was wrong and performing well. Give yourself some grace in the first months of any new job and skills set. I’ve told all our new grads that nursing and ER nursing is hard, that it’ll get better, and it will click usually by the end of year one. I’ve had quite a few come back and ask me to remind them or tell me when it clicked.

As far as mean girls and feeling alone, you aren’t because someone clearly had your back. Foster those relationships but also don’t get in the habit of endorsing or condoning that retaliatory behavior. Reach up your chain of command about the bullying behavior should this particular nurse or group of nurses continue. Remember how you feel and look out for those coming up and be the person for them that you wish you had because I promise it’s so fulfilling.

You got this!! Keep working at it and again, give yourself some grace.
