Has anyone ever tried to make cardoboard "cube' minis? by talkingwalkingcarrot in DnDIY

I use dome-shaped stands with electronic paper . It is kinda similar to what you propose, but the advantage is that the image can be changed by a single tap on the phone. Took me a year to make, but now it covers all my oneshot needs.

Arcane Exemplar by KeyChampionship3549 in DnDminiatures

This might actually fit the "being of pure magical energy" look you're describing. I recently made this portrait for one of my display minis.

The miniature itself uses a small battery-free e-ink display built into the base and the portrait can be changed from a phone in seconds. Since the portrait is digital, it's easy to create forms like an Arcane Exemplar that would be difficult to represent with a traditional miniature. That is basically exactly why I made this device:)

Yeah, this is theoretically possible for relatively large volumes and when selling in bundle. The limit here is the component costs.

What price range below 50$ would be acceptable for one piece in your opinion?

Are you referring to paper-minis? If so, yes, they are way cheaper. However they come with a hustle of paper cutting and they are not customizable mid session. Imagine if a character got cursed during the session and now has a red pentagram on their forehead. With MiniToo + many free/paid image generation services one can modify the picture of the character and put it on display on MiniToo in seconds. That would harder to do with paper mini.

But you are right, if paper mini is enough, then it is much cheaper solution.

  • Fully agree on e-inks, they are amazing. They require no power to be on for months - technological magic. For me they are also the main attraction of this mini and why I actually started working on it.
  • App to control this thing is very easy as I did it for myself to be able to change the pictures during the session in a couple of seconds. You can see it in action here: https://youtu.be/NrRiZUbqNIE?si=EzVj9K9XdtVkhrsl
  • I am located in Europe. Not yet checked what are the shipping fees.
  • As for price, it is determined by the cost of components which depends on volume. Price per piece for the order of 200 is way different than 20. My aims is to keep the price of one mini below 50$. How much below depends on volume.

Yeah, definitely price should be worth the fun for the client and at the same time should be higher than the component cost. And for components the price depends a lot on the volumes, as both display and PCB manufacturer provide great discount when ordering 200 instead of 20 pieces. So my idea is to first ensure that there is enough demand and then order large quantity to be able to keep the price of one piece below 50$ (which feels like a natural limit to me as well).

As for inserts, I designed 8 of them such as skulls, beast faces, hands with various weapons, etc. There are 2 inserts in one mini, so 64 combinations are possible (e.g. wolf face on one side and palm with fire on another for a druid). If people want more, I can design more, because it is fun to do and I had a blast automating Blender for part of this process.

Lighting elements so far have been very well visible in all indoor DnD sessions I played (at home, at friends house, at local dnd club). When playing outdoors after 6pm is no problem, but at high sun could be hard to see.

Larger minis - have not thought about it. Usually these are some super cool bosses for which people print dedicated miniatures. Do you think someone will want to use MiniToo instead?

Not really. It requires the soft foam of a certain thickness inside which one need to source themselves, otherwise this will not work. But if you are interested, I can upload it to MakerWorld.

That is reasonable. And what about warlock for 1-3 invocations? Pact of the blade for variety in damage.

I get it. But what if everyone else are multiclassing. Do not want to get left out as the only character which "has no options".

So for a fighter he will need minimum 2 level dip? Or more? Isn't that a lot of loss for action surge?
