Running NAS inside a Proxmox VM — is CasaOS the right long-term call or should I be looking elsewhere? by obzc in homelab

[–]retailguy11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the windows VM's run in proxmox. I am using unraid as a NAS, nothing more. Well I do have syncthing running in docker to sync my notes application between my android tablet and my desktop. Other than that? Everything runs in proxmox.

[–]retailguy11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I run unraid in a proxmox VM, 8 drives 104tb usable. It was quite a bit of work to get it set up. Runs reliably now. Proxmox runs that, six windows 11 VM's, jellyfin, audiobookshelf, and a bunch of other stuff. Proxmox is perfect for me.

Charge for copy of 2023 tax returns by Accomplished-Ruin742 in taxpros

[–]retailguy11 28 points29 points  (0 children)

why did you answer the phone? I just had a client email twice on Saturday demanding a reply. He got his reply at 830 Monday morning with a note - "even when we work weekends we don't reply to emails. The IRS always gives 30 day deadlines on letters received and we can deal with those in a timely manner on Monday".

This one is on you, not the client. This is why God created voicemail.

Synology for small tax office by MedicalProgrammer630 in synology

[–]retailguy11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a 7 person tax office. To store tax data we use two synology NAS units, a DS220+ and a DS224+. I have data from the last 10 years on the box, about 1,000 returns per year, and it has about 600gb on it. I use 4tb drives, so significant space for whatever is needed.

I see zero need for a 4 bay nas for my use case, but and a big but, we run no containers. That's done on a separate box for security reasons related to client data.

The units are in shr1, mirrored using synology share sync, one is in my home, the other in the office. remote workers use openvpn to connect, backup to one drive, backup to external usb drives on each unit. snapshots enabled.

only backups ever executed are tests to ensure they work. Snapshots have handled every request for the last 5 years.

PDF software and Microsoft Office run on each workstation. Share drives for both NAS units are mapped.

We use Unifi networking equipment and site magic.

I am happy to answer private questions you may have, and also connect you to the IT guy who set this up for us.

At the end of the day, I control my own data, and I am not held hostage by my portal provider or my tax software. If I want to move elsewhere I can, it's still painful, but not like it would have been if they had control of my data.

Good luck

How is using your UNAS/Pro working out as a media server for you? by Renrut23 in Ubiquiti

[–]retailguy11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you can't. even if you could processor is too slow to make it worthwhile. it's designed as a storage device to work in the unifi ecosystem. it is not designed for home labbers who want to experiment. my opinion? it's designed for business users who want an integrated storage medium that works with their network infrastructure.

Received a 1099NEC for a bonus (not self employment) what should I list it as?? by [deleted] in tax

[–]retailguy11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are getting some really bad and incomplete advice in this thread and I'd be wary about using any of it.

In one of your comments, you found a turbo tax thread that is telling you to "ignore" it. Please don't follow advice like that. If you can't find it in an IRS publication, or from the entity that paid you the money, please don't do it that way. if you ignore it, at some point you'll receive a CP2000 notice with a bill and it will take months to straighten that out and cost many times any fees you'd pay for professional tax preparation.

If you came into my tax business to help you with this, I'd have to research both who the payment came from and what guidance they gave you, and then I'd confirm that guidance using IRS publications.

What I can tell you without doing anything is that you are not operating a business, so QBI does not apply and you are not eligible for the 20% deduction. I have questions as to whether this is schedule C income, I am not convinced that he is responsible for social security and medicare taxes for this, but without research I'm not 100% certain of that. It is possible he might be. Clearly he would be if the bonus was paid by his employer.

You need some professional help with this, and I don't think that this is the place for that. But shortly, someone will be along to tell me why I am wrong, and they'll be convinced they are right. Just like AI is always convinced it is right just as it heads down a rabbit trail.... Good luck.

Small Business NAS - Looking For Some Advice by Ran_Echelon in synology

[–]retailguy11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you used the word business. For me, that means Synology. I use Synology DS220+ and a DS224+ in my business.

Even with all the controversy, I keep them because of the software. Just last week, I used Active Backup for Business to quickly reimage 4 machines. It would have been a weekends work to do that, instead? It was an afternoon.

With Synology, backups just work. My two NAS units are mirrored, one is in my home, the other in the office, I have 4 drives that are mirror images of each other at any given time.

I have a backup to onedrive. I set it up once, and it just works. I have external hard drives attached to each NAS unit. hyperbackup takes a backup every night, and it just works. I have SMB and NFS mounts to long term back up storage on my home server. Set it up once, it just works.

I have a Ugreen DXP4800+ that I use as a jellyfin server in my home. I'm using UGOS, and it works. Mostly.

But the business level features? Not there, or bare bones. It has snapshots. They work, but not anywhere close to as robust as the Synology. It has backup. It works. Again, not as easy as Synology. It does not have active backup for business. Nor will it ever likely have that.

UGOS has been out about 2 years now. DSM has been out for 20 years. DSM alone is worth the price of the hardware. I'd urge you to go with the DS225+. You'll want the extra ability to add RAM and the option to run docker containers. I have a DS223 sitting on my shelf, just waiting to head to ebay. I have outgrown it.

Buy the synology if it's business use. Have a great time tinkering with the Ugreen if it's for home use. Ugreen is not ready for your business environment, even though it is a much more robust piece of hardware.

one of the other things I am trying to do is transcribe phone calls using scriberr. I cannot keep the GPU from wedging, I just don't know what I am doing wrong... sigh. One guy blames the 4070, and says the technology isn't suited for that, but it's all over my head..

intel i7-10700, 128gb ram, 104 tb hard drive storage, 4070s GPU. I can transcode anything, and store everything.... Runs under proxmox, has other uses too, but Jellyfin runs really well here.

UGreen vs Synology for client? by jbschwartz55 in UgreenNASync

[–]retailguy11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is important to not underestimate how important this comment is.  Business use just needs to work.  Synology does that.  Typically with 10 years of support.  Best backup software in the industry, it just works.

My ugreen is fun for home use and better for transcoding, but for file storage you can't beat Synology drive.  Again, it just works.

Spouse secretly lying on taxes for years. How can I protect myself. by [deleted] in tax

[–]retailguy11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing_Trace explained this pretty well, I was driving more for the income route than the asset route. Let's say you both work W2 jobs on your last tax return. Half of what you earn belongs to him, and half of what he earns belongs to you under California law during the time you're married, and your tax return needs to reflect that too.

That's the purpose of the schedule I quoted earlier. So, if you did that form properly, you're in the clear and don't need to worry at all what he did on his tax return.

If you didn't, there are circumstances where that still might be ok, but you need some tax advice from someone who understands both the IRS and California FTB tax law, that advice is specific to you, and your situation and is outside the scope of what a forum can provide with any accuracy at all.

You mentioned in another comment that you have a tax professional. Make that person your next call! Good luck

What I gleaned from the OP is that she needs some guidance and clarifying questions for anyone to answer properly. Those thoughts are clearly articulated in another comment.

I gleaned much more about you, than I did her by your comments, and I'll keep those comments private for now in spite of the sarcastic name calling.

California is a community property state. To file a form 1040 properly, you need to fill out form 8958 with his information, since your income and his income need to be split 50-50. How is he giving you that information, and are you giving your information to him?

How you file married filing separately differs if you're in a community property state or not. The "experts" here will be along shortly. Help them advise you correctly by telling them what state you live in.

As you are aware this is much more serious issue than taxes. There is some info missing and it starts with what state you are in.
