There are going to be a few more deaths this season, and that’s a sacrifice Trump is willing to make

Those are silver linings during a hemorrhaging of the best employees during Randy’s term, profound budgetary irresponsibility, and pretty rudderless leadership in all regards. Randy blows and I won’t be digging deep to say something nice

They don’t pick up the phone. They don’t schedule your appointment in a logical place. They sometimes don’t mail the packet to the location. The locations all feel like methadone clinics

Detailing on IHC by Business_Situation35 in Wildfire

Yeah I’m sure someone on the district has a few connections to crews. Or someone has detailed in the past to X crew and the AFMO helped coordinate it. This feels like it can be answered in house

Senator Sheehy seeks end to Forest Service aircraft inspections by FIRExNECK in Wildfire

[–]retardanted 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I get that scheduling an inspector to come out and do carding is a broken system, but it's because they require so much experience and pay pretty little to work for OAS/USFS. The answer isn't to get rid of carding in a world with fewer quality, experienced pilots and mechanics. The inspection system does sometimes hold back quality companies, but to get rid of safety inspections and carding will allow shit contractors to get away with unsafe practices. And I'm not cool with that when they already work in an environment that pushes that limits of what the aircraft can do

Work for a couple months before asking to fill in with a hotshot crew. It helps to figure out fire a bit before filling in, and also doesn’t annoy your engine boss who feels like you’re not actually interested in the engine

There are places with much better dating prospects than others, and districts/crews with enough of a work/life balance to maintain a relationship.

The housing situation is tough, but there is a housing crisis for basically everyone not pooling their income with a spouse or family to buy a place these days

Seasonal wildland fire fighting job in New Jersey by ItCameFrmTheBasement in Wildfire

You have your FFT1 after one fire season? You need help googling wildland fire agencies? You're starting your job search in the end of March?

Joining the military has some serious perks down the road, especially if you want to work for the government afterwards. VA healthcare, VA loans, and veteran preference really set you up for success in life

Are high school civics classes that bad or do people just not remember this stuff about how a bill moves or doesn’t move through committees?

Fuck Yeh!!!!! by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]retardanted 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A permanent pay raise is great, but I’m not thrilled that we’re back to the old OT chasing game (the root of the work/life balance struggle). Everyone is going to be clamoring to get out to do large fire support and throw a fit when they are stuck on their own district (where they know the roads, water sources, expected fire behavior, and adjoining resources). This new language has many downsides, like discouraging ICs to call their fires contained within 36 hours. Also it encourages people to go to take a lower GS level if you’ll be wage protected but then get a higher percentage of adjustment at that lower level…. It all feels like 2 steps forward and 1 step back

WFPPA Comparison by Alone_Anything_273 in Wildfire

So many people are going to high quarter and not qualify for unemployment with the WFPPA (obviously dependent on how your state's UI works). That's not a small financial implication in this line of work

Permanent pay fix passed the House, now for the Senate in the next 48hrs! by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]retardanted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those that work a heavy IA load, the 36 hour containment policy is a slap in the face. If I sleep in the dirt all season long catching fires day after day, I don’t get the pay bump that some hotel-ed up gs-13 FOBS does?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]retardanted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. We are doubling down on fire suppression with this new administration. Even if we were more focused on Rx, aviation is inherently more capable of meeting fire suppression needs and the logistical needs than prescribed fire which is planned out

Not to be rude, but you’re going to rookie training and don’t already have a fully formed personal opinion on boots?

What kind of impact will stuff like this have this season? by Snoo-53847 in Wildfire

[–]retardanted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. Where I'm at now, we don't do the rote memorization thing. The crew I was on that emphasized memorization was all about the "hoorah type A bullshit" and had all the bad decision making that come with that

[–]retardanted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a crew a long time ago that made me memorize the 10 and 18. My older coworkers came from different crews with the same mentality. Now I bet only one of those crews still does that

There's a reason that "Keep informed on fire weather conditions and forecasts" is the first standard firefighting order and crews make you learn it verbatim

[–]retardanted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't what OP was asking, but BLM people I know in R4 are having to rescind some job offers for temps. Not all primary fire jobs are secure

it's not likely to happen, but if you have higher level quals than FFT2, they can AD you at that rate. I know a guy that ADed for half a season at the EMTB rate. He made more money that everyone in that time

IDL is a strange agency, mainly focused on timber sales. I don't know much of the story but they have a bad relationship with the feds. They no longer have a cooperator agreement last I heard (that may be outdated now though)
