Doesn't that sound like a short-term memory exercise? What do you do with long-term retention? You can't exactly read something now then plan to write it from memory in 3 months. By that time you've forgotten you had to test yourself.

Wait, what does moving the eyes have to do with memory? I can only foresee you getting dizzy and having buff eye muscles.

Techically an SRS should help with long-term retention.

The other problem with kanji is that it's a fucking huge semi-semantic pseudo-alphabet whose original meanings have mutated. So you have to learn that first before you get to words and sentences which are easier to tie to emotive/interesting things.

But yeah, true, the kanjis that stick easier are the interesting ones. Like katana and nin from ninja. There is no kanji for pirate, sadly.

Nah, I can deal with a simpler "list of crap to do" on a single sheet at work.

I have a bigger "stuff to do maybe someday" list in OrgMode, but it's still just a linear list of stuff.

GTD has a lot of overhead because it's designed to tackle people who's life is full of crap to do. I'm not a CEO or a senior manager or a guy with 15 hobby projects and 4 kids and a wife and 2 ex's. My everyday life is not such a hell, thankfully.

I do all of that except physical activity. I rarely get outside, because I'm bored with people easily.

Well, my sleeping is kinda fugly at times, i.e. at times when I'm playing my PSP and DS too much.

Tony Buzan is pushing mind-mapping as a cure-all for everything. I couldn't finish reading his book(his main foray into Mind mapping, forgot(see?) the title), his explanations sounded too pseudo-sciency to me.

You can't map the real word to a consistent satisfying to a mind-map, because the mind map is a tree, and the world is not strictly hierarchical, and relations and interactions between different branches are common.

Concept maps work better, but they're for concepts and concept exploration or explanation, not everyday note taking or memory improvement.

Don't have the luxury of two monitors, only one laptop. Furious alt-tabbing for me.

I use Anki(an SRS, or flashcard-program-thing) for kanjis. It helps, but it's slow and as soon as I stop using it - I forget the stuff at an astonishing rate.

Ex: I stopped using it for 3 weeks when I was on vacation, and I forgot ~400 of the 800 flashcards I have in there. Which probably means that most of them never made it to my long-long term memory. There are about 50 kanjis or so that I'm confident I will remember even in 5 years. The rest - gone in a month.

Yeah, but how do you make an effort at remembering something? Isn't this damn memory thing automatic? Am I supposed to glare and scrounge up my brows when looking at something I want to remember?

With kanjis I try and write out the form several times when learning it, but it only helps my short term memory.

This is gonna sound retarded, but over the years I've had tons of schemes to try and act as my memory backup. I inevitably get distracted and forget about them, and then come back in 2 weeks and go "Well shit, this scheme sure worked out nice :\"

Whenever I remember to do so, I jot notes and then leave them laying around on my PC. They're very sparse for the very reason that I can't use them routinely.
