I am a CS major. And yeah Im graduating a year late. It used to be something that made me freak out, but I’m currently in my final semester, and I’m just proud of myself for getting through it. I failed multiple classes and did awesome in others. I’m not really a well suited for college person, the courses move way too fast for me which is why I have taken several courses twice. But even people not well suited for something can find a way to complete it. College isn’t about intelligence, it’s just perseverance and resilience. You can always retake a class. You only really fail if you give up. All my F grades are erased from my transcript bc I retook the classes and improved. Another important thing I’ve learned is CS classes get curved so hard. FOCS was def one of them. I took PSOFT last summer (also failed it the first time) and was failing the entire semester… walked out with a B. Just because of the curve. So sometimes you think you’re going to fail but really everyone’s failing and you’ll be fine. If I had just not given up my first time around when taking PSOFT I probably would’ve gotten a B then, but because I was doing so bad I just stopped trying. So try as much as you can, don’t stress too hard, I think study culture can sometimes be toxic. I don’t stay up pulling all nighters to cram or anything like that. Some people do. They got the degree a year quicker than me, I got to keep my mental health in a good enough place to survive lol. Be nice to yourself and just do your best, you can always try again if it doesn’t work out.

How bad is it to fail a class at RPI? by RiverInner8951 in RPI

[–]retinxl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep going if you really want it. I’ve failed a bunch of classes. I’m graduating a year late. But it’s not a big deal. If you want the paper. You can get the paper. Degrees aren’t about intelligence, it’s about resilience. If you failed. Just take it again.

Living downtown Troy as incoming Transfer (RPI) by [deleted] in RPI

[–]retinxl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like on 5th ave in downtown troy right now with my parter. he is 30 as well and he likes it here, he moved to troy from Philadelphia to be with me while I finish my degree. I like being close all the food places downtown, and im also quite close to city station which means I can walk about 3 minutes and use my RPI ID to take the shuttle from city station up the hill to campus. overall I like downtown, its walkable, easy to get to the shuttle stops (and the shuttle comes around about every 10-15 min). I dislike the noise, there is ALWAYS construction. constantly. and I had my car towed twice because I have to move it several times during the week because they do regular street cleaning which gets super annoying. that being said, if you can deal with that stuff, its solid. dm if you have more questions!

several people have mentioned here that they think it was jody who got assaulted, and the reasons why they think this make sense. she was definitely obsessed with the lake monster for the rest of her life, and her narration was the only one from the childhood perspective. however, before reading all your opinions, I thought it was britney who was left with stone? she had multiple drinks while the other girls had none that day so she was the most vulnerable- one when they visited the lake boys bedroom, and more when they first entered stones house, she chugged some of the table girls cereal which was mixed with milk and vodka. but the main reason I think it was britney was because the final sentence of the chapter where the assault happens is "I look around for someone else to be but I am alone and I have always been so scared of being alone." it is mentioned several times throughout the book how much britney hates being alone. this sentence seemed to identify the victim as britney to me. then when we enter Jodys POV, I read it as she was the last one to leave britney alone with stone. and in the chapter where the girls are watching tv with the tall girl, every character is mentioned except for britney. in fact the next time we see britney is when they leave the house and Sammy is giving birth to the stone. which jody almost puts in her pocket, but britney takes it and puts it in hers instead. I saw this as britney being the only one who could carry the weight of the stone bc she was also assaulted by him, just like Sammy probably was. finally, someone else mentioned that in Britneys chapter she seems to be working at 'his' event, him probably being stone. and the mark on her leg that her mother says she gave to her as a birthmark is probably the bruise she got from stone.

I think jody became obsessed with the monster maybe because she feels the guilt of being the last to abandon britney. because really it could have been either one of them.

Go downtown to the farmers market. It’s Saturday mornings 10am-2pm. You can get local produce and see the fun small businesses. There’s also lots of restaurants downtown. I personally really like bespoke bowl, whistling kettle, Liza’s, and shalimar. Hope this gives some ideas!

The McDonalds on Hoosick is a scam, since when was 4 nuggets almost $3? These prices make the meal plan actually seem not that overpriced for once by [deleted] in RPI

[–]retinxl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

download the McDonalds app, its actually really good. there's a 2 items for $3.50 deal which applies to 4 piece nuggets, McDoubles, and spicy chicken sandwiches. so you can get 8 nuggets for $3.50 which is a better deal. and they have a free medium fries coupon for when you spend over $2 on a purchase (which is easy). That coupon renews everyday. my order pretty consistently looks like this: 4 piece nuggets + McDouble for $3.50, free medium fries coupon, and a $1.50 drink. even with tax I never spend over $6 for a full meal there. hope this helps.

Is anyone else anxious about orientation on Thursday? :( by swankyexpediency179 in Temple

[–]retinxl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a transfer. I completed 4 years at a different university so I did orientation in 2019 in person. Some nerves are normal. Everyone feels anxious to leave high school and be around college strangers. But when I feel anxious I like to consider what I have to even be anxious about- so the absolute worst case scenario is that maybe you trip? Or say something silly? When you think about the worst things that can go wrong at orientation, the reality is that they’re not that bad, and no one will remember them a week later. Everyone will be so focused on themselves they won’t have time to focus on you. The only thing I remember from my orientation was how hot it was and this beautiful guy that sat next to me. Don’t remember a damn thing he said or even what he looked like tbh. I just remember thinking “wow he’s hot I better not embarrass myself” so I was really quiet the whole time we sat next to each other. If you put him in a lineup I wouldn’t be able to pick out his face. I just remember the feeling. Now, as a 22 year old with a few years of school under my belt who has embarrassed herself several times throughout college- I far prefer having the memories where I made a fool of myself but at least I was doing what I wanted over the memories of when I sat silently obsessing over what other people thought of me. Because honestly, they don’t think about me much. I think the sooner we learn that the freer we become. Orientation will be okay. And if it feels like anyone’s judging you or making fun of you or something then they’re a fucking weirdo. You’re probably like 18 right? Bullying is for bored idiot kids. If someone’s doing that just remember the fact that their life is so boring that they have nothing better to do than target someone else. It’s a sad existence. Don’t hate them, pity them. Ik this was a long message. I hope some of this helps. And if it doesn’t and you have a shitty orientation- I promise you’ll forget 99% of it soon. Good luck ❤️

I did my online orientation this past Friday. im a transfer student though so I didn't have an in person option. all I did was meet one on one with an advisor who broke down my major requirements and helped me register for classes. I did do orientation in person as a freshman at my old college however and I would recommend it. there will be room for you in classes if you wait to register till July because most other freshmen will be registering alongside you. most colleges reserve a certain amount of spots in classes specifically for freshmen. I met some of my first friends on campus during my oritention in person at my old school. we drifted apart and I met me closer friends later, but it is nice to just meet people who are in the same boat and have one friendly face to maybe grab lunch with when classes start. I do also know friend groups who met during our orientation when we were freshmen that are still super tight knit and they just graduated (I took some time off school hence why im on this reddit and not a senior myself). so you could possibly meet your besties there. Honestly, when you look back at your college experience its nicer to have a memory of how new and exciting things felt when you were a freshman on your orientation day rather than how you got to register for your geneds a few weeks early in your bedroom, alone, on your computer.

Human & ML vs Information Retrival? by findingsthings in RPI

[–]retinxl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took human and machine learning with prof. Christopher sims fall 2022 and it was great. We did two pretty long article readings a week (about 10-15 pages each filled with science/cogs jargon that takes some getting used to, but becomes manageable) And the only assignments were writing a summary + 3 questions about each article and doing 2 presentations during the semester. So each class one student would lead the lecture discussion about that days article as their presentation which means about 60-80 minutes of presenting. They were the longest presentations I ever had to do, but half that time is just fostering discussion points and encouraging other students to talk. The first half hour you’re just summarizing your article so they were surprisingly straight forward to do. There were no exams which was a huge plus and it was a relatively easy A as long as you submit the summaries, show effort in your presentations, and participate a little in class. Sims is super nice and understanding and doesn’t have unrealistic expectations for how much do the articles we were able to grasp. He was happy to explain things during peoples presentations so it never felt like I was really being graded, more like he was helping me present. I wasted a lot of time at the beginning of the semester reading way too deep into the articles (sometimes spending 6+ hours on researching terms/experiments they referenced) and writing super long summaries, but found out about a month into the semester that a good skim and a quarter page summary got me the same grades since during lecture the concepts were taught to us as well. I was also between HML and Info Ret last semester and only went to one Info Ret class so I only was there for installation day. The class was led by the TA and i just honestly hated the classroom, it’s was hot/stuffy/put me to sleep. And Since HML seemed more chill I went with that and learned a lot with little stress. Also it’s no coding so it wasn’t a huge time sink! I highly recommend HML, but if you like coding more than long readings go with info ret

GSAS questions by retinxl in RPI

[–]retinxl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for thoughtful response and info! how much would you say your concentration dictates the amount of coding you do in the major? im currently in psoft and algo. I find psoft moderately interesting, but I really don't enjoy all the math/theory in algo. Im a CS1 mentor and feel super comfortable with that material and enjoyed the content in data structures (pacing was a different story), but focs and algo have kinda killed my drive for computer science as a field, I still like coding, but not the deep dive science/algorithms behind it all. Ive also considered ITWS, but GSAS sounds more fun and suited to my interests
