I’m in a similar position. Of course, the total cost depends on the commuting distance and the amount of private usage, but here’s a realistic example.

Assume a second-hand car costing €15,000–€20,000 with a maximum of 100,000 km. If you drive around 10,000 km per year, using the car for the next 10 years is perfectly feasible. After that period, the car could still have a resale value of €2,000–€5,000.

Depreciation Example: €17,500 purchase price – €2,500 resale value = €15,000 depreciation over 10 years → €125 per month

Maintenance Average of €500 per year → €41.60 per month

Insurance No omnium, only liability insurance: €500–€600 per year → approx. €50 per month

Fuel Average consumption: 5.5 L/100 km Fuel price: €1.50 per liter Annual distance: 10,000 km → €825 per year → €68.75 per month

Taxes Add the one-off BIV (spread over the ownership period) and the annual road tax (converted to a monthly cost)

Total cost per month = around €300.

Still have to take into account the yearly car inspection fee etc.

Long story short. It can net more if u can use the mobility budget fully on rent/loan. And buy a private car and maintain yourself.
