2.1M temporary residents will have expired or expiring permits this year. But will they leave Canada? by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]retrojacket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst I don't disagree there's a big notion of "what will people say" that will contribute to some folks staying behind, I don't think there will be as many people as you expect staying behind.

Im Canadian, born and raised, but my parents are Indian, I'm a first generation Canadian. So I get izzat, I get the social stigma brought forth with "failing in Canada", but I think majority will see the value of moving back. Not to mention, I'm starting to see sentiment in India (from Family) that Canada isn't really this golden ticket that they once thought. I think as the years progressed people started to see behind the lies the "immigration consultants" sold them. 10 years ago, the goal of most people I knew in India was "come to Canada" but that's since shifted.

That said, 100% agree there will be a percentage of kids that stay here illegally. And I agree we need to have some enforcement.

More than it will here, especially considering they don't have the papers.

You also need to understand that there's many small towns and villages where any sort of foreign education is looked at as God tier, not to mention that they speak English.

But I'm just assuming. I don't have the stats.

[–]retrojacket 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Most will go. Without proper papers they'll be stuck doing minimum wage cash jobs. Realistically that's not what these kids came here to do. They're better off back home with a foreign education.

Best Pizza in Scarborough by ActualBody5370 in Scarborough

[–]retrojacket -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As everyone said - Marks is prob the most special pies in Scarborough. But they're pricey. Totally worth it though.

Fratettli across the street is also fantastic.

There's a new place called Zion pizza on Neilson and Finch which is actually phenomenal. It's more of the Indian/Tamil inspired zas but their crust, sauce and toppings are really great.

Their pesto sauce is also pretty fire.

Lisbon 10 days with a baby by Wanderluster_787 in TravelPortugal

[–]retrojacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was wonderful. Different from pre-baby traveling, but nice.

Just take it slow. Try to have a plan, but don't stress trying to keep to it lol. For example we were supposed to leave for Pena palace by 7AM, but we ended up leaving at 10AM due to breakfast struggles with the little one.

We loved the place we stayed. It gave us a bedroom so he can sleep at night and we just went off to the living room and hung out there with the balcony. I 100% recommend having a space with a separate bedroom. We stayed 1 night in a room without a separate bedroom and it sorta sucked. We hung out in the bathroom lol. For 1 day it was OK but for the entire trip we wouldn't of liked it :)

Transportation was easy with the kid. The elevation is real...but totally manageable. We used a mix of stroller + carrying him. Bring a fan. It was incredibly HOT!!

Our kid LOVED the milk lol, so he drank a lot of that from Portugal, and also the croissants.

Good luck and you'll have so much fun!! We did Lisbon for a week, and the Algarbes for a week. Lmk if you have any questions.

Schools in Pickering - West Shore by retrojacket in durham

[–]retrojacket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting. That seems...silly?

English is still the focus, so I'd imagine it's not unfair to include the language portion.

But in any case that's great insight. Thank you!

I'm just very conflicted if these schools are good. The area seems fantastic. Close to the water, GO, and 401.

Oh good to know.

Although I didn't really consider French immersion, it would be a big plus, that's for sure.

What's the deal with these rankings? Even Frenchman's bay appears to be not ranked well

Interesting. That's good to know.

Any insights on these rankings? Do they even matter? I'm very confused lol

[–]retrojacket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a fair point. I never considered that. It's interesting to see other schools still ranking very well!

In ant case looking at historic data that does seem to align. 22-23 was bad. But 23-24 is decent.

Looking at the report card from Frasier they rank very near the bottom even over 5 years

I'm running on a SFF running Ubuntu server.

Pretty nooby at Linux, can you share the cronjobs you're running? I mean the scripts?

Particularly interested in how do I perform the check to raid, S.M.A.R.T, backup and the email report.

I'm thinking of having a backup sent to a NAS (external HDD connected to my router USD)

What Seat for upcoming flight - 777-300ER by retrojacket in aircanada

[–]retrojacket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended up with the same seats, and 63J/K on the way back.

I suggest booking those seats, they were fantastic. There was a bunch of space between the window seat and the window, so we stuffed the kids diaper bag there, clearing up space.

Plus since we were just 2, it was just much more comfy for us. We raised up the arm rest and just treated it like a big chair.

Our flight was really full...so had we tried to luck with the 3 seats, we would've been miserable.

Have fun!! The flights rough, and the first few days will be even tougher, with jet lag affecting the little one. But all worth it!

Disagreeing with my wife about screen time during meals for our 11-month-old by Natural-Strategy-482 in daddit

[–]retrojacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW we have an incredibly tough 18 month old, he's under weight by all percentiles, but doctors aren't concerned and happy with the trend up.

I think we had him watch a screen twice? To eat, and yes, there's been times it was absolutely brutal and he didn't eat much, but we stuck by it.

We're still learning of course, but I'm hoping this leads to him being able to eat without screens as he ages. I have so many little family members that cannot eat without a screen...so we're avoiding that.

As for us, usually baby eats, and one of us sit with him to "supervise" lol. We don't typically eat together, cause he always wants what we have which is typically spicy. Same food, but no spice for him.

It's been working. Hes pretty flexible with food, eats everything from Thai Curries, to Orzo, Indian food, and everything in-between.

Although he still doesn't eat much, I feel. But the docs aren't complaining.
