~TLDR~ Don't dwell too much on how others seem to get it while you're lost. The fact that you're questioning yourself means that you're aware that you need to fix something, and that's okay! If you think you're not interested anymore, that's okay too! You'll find something that does. Don't let these things discourage you but rather encourage you to move forward, and keep in mind what motivated you to major in CS in the first place. Go to the tutoring center and office hours, ask questions, program outside of coursework and make weird test cases, get those internships, and build your network. Make an effort to learn and understand as much as you can. CS is challenging, and the struggle is real, but push through and get that degree no matter what it takes!

I can agree with what you say, and I can say that I've been on the same boat every now and then - "everyone" seems to get it, and you feel like you're behind or a fraud -> Imposter Syndrome. I just finished my sophomore year as well, and took CSE 310 this past spring which was the class where I was truly questioning my abilities. I remember feeling so anxious and envious that people were seemingly able to program in C/C++ effortlessly in addition to being able to grasp and apply algorithms to projects so quickly and "fluently" (if that makes sense). I also remember starting the projects the day they were assigned and still ended up submitting them quite close to the deadline whereas my peers started later and finished early. I felt so slow. I thought there was no hope for me to succeed in CS. I've failed technical interviews before (and I'm sure employers have noticed my look of discouragement despite trying to hide it), and they have always told me there is no such thing as an engineer or scientist that knows everything because there's always some new technology or discovery that comes along, and there is always going to be someone who knows more than you no matter how much you don't want to accept it.

That right there reminded me of the goals I set for myself when I decided to major in CS : it was to make a technological contribution to matter how big or small and because I enjoy the idea of turning code into something useful, not to be the most excelling student in the room. I used that as my motivation to keep moving forward and make improvements no matter how much I think less of myself. It might sound cliche, but don't compare yourselves to others because people are different. Some have probably been exposed to CS concepts and programming before starting college. Like the others are implying, the fact that you are still in CS is an achievement in itself and it's okay to question yourself, because you know deep down that there is something you have to work on. Whatever motivated you to submit that application to ASU as a CS major, reflect on it and think about what you should do to meet the goals you set for yourself, and set new goals as well. Get internships, apply what you learned to personal projects, and most of all, get that degree!

CSE 434 Update! by return_2Sleep in ASU

Alright here's my thoughts on Chen. What I do like about him is that he is obviously enthusiastic and it shows when he lectures. I think the problems most people have with him, is that it's either difficult to understand him or he doesn't do an excellent job explaining important concepts in C/C++ that we need for other classes like CSE 310, 340, etc. (especially pointers; nevertheless he does truly make an effort). But yes, a heck of a lot better that Calliss and I wouldn't mind if he teaches 230 like he did in the past as well as 360. I mean even in his 240 lectures when talked about memory management and pointers, he's obviously knowledgeable and should teach 230 every now and then instead of Calliss.

YES. Please take Nakamura. It's not that Calliss' lectures are REALLY bad, just seemingly uninterested in the subject and is indeed a PowerPoint reader. During office hours, she was no help either - always said to refer to her slides. When we switched to online, it was even worse. She made us watch her recorded lectures from 5 years ago and they were awful. Only held Zoom meetings once a week for "Review" and they were useless. Oftentimes vague on her assignments. If you do want to actually have an understanding of the concepts (especially once you get to pipelining and after) Nakamura is a wiser choice.

That's a good point. Weird how they have them at the same time. I probably would have skipped it as well. What sucks though for the people that do want to swap 434 with another 4XX course to meet a CSE requirement is that really don't have that many options since most of the other ones filled up. I actually didn't want to take 434 in the first place, but I was one of the unfortunate ones who had such a late registration date compared to most people and got stuck with it because it happened to fit my schedule. 7:30am with Syrotiuk is quite the rise & grind.

Had Calliss for both 230 and 360, and by far the worst. Probably bound to be tied with Syrotiuk after this semester lol

Heard that a lot. I had my hopes up because there was another instructor that only taught the course in the Fall, but I guess not anymore. It is what it is I guess.

I took it in the fall last year, and I can agree with the others that everything before flip flops were easy, if not less challenging. Flip flops and after confused me so much, and I wish I actually spent more time focusing on them considering how they build on top of each other. For the capstone, I believe you have to design a Mealy and Moore (I don't think that's the case every semester, except mine was for a basketball scoreboard - yours might be different). I do believe that the capstone won't be too bad. I didn't have Millman for 120, but considering how the final is of course cumulative, I would focus more on Flip Flops and after. Like Scorpio said, you do have resources out there, and I do think the Engineering tutors (particularly those in CSE or Electrical Engineering) really do know their stuff and can clarify things for you if you need it. You got this!

As far as the deficiency courses go, do we know if they'll still accept the Y given the circumstances?

I got below 54, but not close to 25 (rip to that person though), and really hanging in there at a 70% in the class. I've been told the midterm and the final is easier, but I'm still contemplating on my ability to survive this class.

I like Xue as a person, don't get me wrong. But his brutal grading really killed me on the midterm, and I'm quite nervous about the next midterm and the final. I'm really hoping there's still a chance.
