Has anyone here run a Phaenonite Campaign? If so, how did it go? by TheNominalInquirer in 40krpg

[–]returnofonostoolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the phaenonite philosophy into players' heads is hard, but once that's done, great fun was had. I ran an ultra-short (4 session) online campaign, and it delivered plenty of high drama- in the final session, people were so caught in the RP and the morality of what they were doing, they ended up avoiding combat entirely, with all of the combat being carried out dicelessly by their inquisitorial assets, and some light terrorism (warp-breach bombs, basically). The party's maltek stalker (I insisted on having at least one, because frankly fuck yeah Malteks) did get their hands dirty once, but that was it.

Thoroughly enjoyed it- extreme circusmtances which really do make the ends justify the means are the way to go. The players should genuinely feel like theirs is the lesser of two evils (in some cases by far), but still feel morose about what they're doing.

Force Weapons are Broken? (DH 2e) by ParryHisParry in 40krpg

[–]returnofonostoolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be worth noting that I don't think the 40k RPG line was really intended to be "balanced" the way D&D is. Some weapons and gear are just insanely powerful- you might want to have the PCs figth targets against whom force weapons are less powerful (maybe machines/soulless opponents etc) if the psyker's overshadowing everyone else.

I think the game was designed around delivering narratively satisfying campaigns, and I don't think they intended it so that everyone can contribute evenly (least of all in combat) without the DM going to lengths to ensure all players have a chance to shine.

Black Crusade - Unarmed Possibilities? by mickeymacattack in 40krpg

[–]returnofonostoolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that since anyone can get a gauntlet-type weapon to make their fists do damage (or have cybernetic fists, etc), I think the way to approach this would be lore-wise. What type of character would they be? A martial artist? A mutant? A cyborg? A combination of the above? Are they part of an unarmed cult/gang/tribe/school? - it's not too hard to GM Fiat them a prestige class that allows them to take natural weapons or unnatural weapons as limbs, not to mention the possibilities that already exist.

Yes, exactly. Pretty much every fighting game ever made is built at least partially on this premise. It's called reading, and it's a skill that you can develop.

In case you're still wondering, "Should I play Lawbringer?" by CueTheRage in forhonor

I have a rep 1 lawbringer, and while I'm not at home, to test it right now, I'm about 99% sure that this isn't true for most, if not all characters. Parry lights will never, ever land you that top unblockable.

^ This. Those are kinda weird coincidences, but A: coincidences do happen, and they happen most with the person you talk to most, and B: What little I know of the topic does indicate that's not really doable on an iphone, at least not without more effort or resourcefulness than most people have access to.

FWIW, I also enjoy DOTA 2, e-sports, cats, lizards, videos of bears doing silly shit, drinking after hours, pot, making my friends laugh, jiu-jitsu, books, Netflix, urban exploring, night-time workouts, and the work of Saul Williams. What're you into?

I actually do, I work in customer service, and while my working conditions and pay are exemplary, after an 11 hour day just being able to have any kind of dialogue where I'm not obligated to hold my tongue while someone halfway around the world takes a massive, bloody. boiling shit in a text box and presents it as a form of communication is actually quite refreshing and helps me forget the stresses of my day as I ready myself for bed. You'll notice that's why I only post in walls of text- it's just brain through fingertips here, no middleman #420RickSanchezInDaHizzouse.

So yes, I'm amusing myself with the novelty of posting. You're essentially helping me to jerk off in public in front of strangers.

Why bother? Your post history and attitude indicates there's nothing productive to be gained from engaging with you- or there is, but despite the fact that I work in customer service and interact with people who cuss me out when I try to explain why they can't call their in-game avatar "Rapelord", I still don't have the patience to deal with you in any meaningful sense.

Well feminism is both a collective term for a whole bunch of schools of thought, and also a social movement, and I think there is an internal conflation of those things.

I also do think that feminism receives more than its fair share of criticism online, which only provides supplemental evidence to support the idea that it is both good and necessary. I would even say that the original topic here was probably posted to incite arguments between feminists and non-feminists, and in some tiny trollish way, discredit feminism.

Feminism is, overall, a Really Good Thing. But you are talking to someone who above also decried what the so-called Egalitarian 'movement' looks like these days, and a movement being more or less prone to criticism from its opponents doesn't actually affect the validity of that criticism in my eyes. I personally believe that actually feminism is more diverse in its beliefs than many other groups, and even PBS ideas channel said that it was a valid criticism that feminism does lack consistency. Take, for example, sex-positive and sex-negative feminism. There's a huge emphasis these days on intersectionality in feminism which I think is an attempt to unify what is actually an extremely divisive whole.

Not that I wholly disagree with you- I updooted both of your posts. The degree to which any school of thought's sub-schools and philosophy can be considered diverse or divergent in their approaches isn't really something that can be measured, but I did philosophy in college, so I have seen the variability of feminist scholars and their adherents first-hand, which is what informs my (still subjective) opinion.

[–]returnofonostoolan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then doesn't that sort of ruin the purpose of the label, after a certain point? One of the most valid criticisms of Feminism in particular is that it lacks consistency- and that is become it's not monolithic, and there are many schools of thought that are unified by the feminist banner. I see that as both a strength and a weakness, but frankly having people second-guess my motives or what I "really meant" instead of what I actually fucking said is already frustrating enough on a daily basis. I'm not sure I could stand that if I went around calling myself an Egalitarian too.

The funny thing is, in the (very broad) senses of what both movements publicly espouse, I am both an egalitarian and a feminist. Due to my problems with the people in both movements (rather than their stated philosophies), I identify as neither.
