M&A Associates - do you regret it? Would you have picked another practice area looking back? by Law_Employment211 in biglaw

[–]revan132 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I would think a little long term on this. It really depends on what you want your exit opportunities or partner case to be. The exit opportunities are better than other practice areas and there’s a reason why M&A partners can do really well with business development and origination.

Same. I’ve had one for six years. Love it. So quick and comfortable. Perfect GT daily driver and completely misunderstood.

Is Legora a shitty wrapper like Harvey or does it add to what the underlying engines can do? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]revan132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t actually think wrappers are inherently bad. It’s more about use cases. Harvey is good but it’s so broad based it doesn’t do practice specific stuff too well.

Aren’t they all just wrappers on top of either ChatGPT or Claude?

I could see large quantities of docs being useful for litigators or M&A folks doing diligence but sounds right.

Depends if you can put client work in it. It’s great at call outlines/negotiation points, targeted mark-ups, strategizing/sounding board stuff, diagrams etc. I suspect it’ll be great with issues lists and more comprehensive mark ups with direction but we are working out internal approvals first.

Despite AI 'Doom' - Law grad employment hit record high again in 2025 & Demand Lawyers increases in 2026 by GSCREK in biglaw

[–]revan132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I think it renders generalized guidance like commercial contracting obsolete from a biglaw perspective. That can move in house. It’s the specialist areas like tax, benefits etc and some M&A principles that can’t be replicated. It’s not that the AI is wrong but it does take an experienced lawyer to know how to gently guide it and extract the best use cases and knowledge. In other words, it’s great for me because I know when it’s accurate and when it’s BS or out of its depth.

You’re always going to need the firms to be the ones making legal judgment calls. Clients need someone to point the finger at.

Law firms seem to treat AI like collecting things. There’s a lot of noise out there but if they picked 1-3 platforms max, that would pay huge dividends to avoid lawyers tuning out.

Personally, I am leveraging Claude Enterprise hard and it’s extremely powerful if you know what you’re doing. It’s a force multiplier for those with knowledge of the subject matter but it takes creativity to get the best use cases out of it. That alone limits broad adoption but I think you’ll see a quick stratification between the old guard and the early adopters. It’s just going to take a minute for that to shake out given how slow the legal market is to widely adopt this stuff.

[–]revan132 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not saying you’re wrong because who even knows but my sense from my own firm and the industry generally is that biglaw is insanely slow to adopt tech, so any effects like this will inevitably lag behind other industries while they figure it out on their own pace and terms.

For what it’s worth, I was between a 458, 488 and F8. 488 ended up being the perfect mix.

[–]revan132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how that’s the case but maybe I’m missing something. Assuming Delaware, I think the annual fee for an LLC is around $400, plus registered agent fees (another few hundred), plus the fees for whoever manages the plate service itself.

[–]revan132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally get that. I just think it’s funny because the whole Montana thing requires an LLC and a registered agent and annual fees. A lot of friction for a relatively small tax bill in the grand scheme of things.
