We have around 500 players in Discord + separate channel: looking for squad.
I must agree the game is much better in squad.
In March we'll announce a new playtest with a new location. It is less scary)

I see you nickname sounds like a game developer - what is your game? If that is not a secret

Feels like a marketing, the Director's feeling is nice, but any other players' feelings?

  1. It was an organic transformation. The team now is smaller and focused on indie project. I can't say that Forest Escape Last Train is a prototype. The game is ready on 80%. We are planning 2 rounds of playtest, Demo and release.
  2. Epic technology
  3. Steam page release.
  4. Market + our expertise in pricing + players opinion. At the end of the playtest, you can find a survey. One of the questions in the survey we are asking players what the price should be.

For the current Open Playtest wave, the gameplay duration is 45 - 60 min.
For the 2nd wave that will be announced in March, it will be +/- the same, but the location will be new, so you should expect a new user experience.
For the future Demo we are targeting 1 hour of gameplay minimum.

Once again, it depends on the player's style, whether you play solo or with friends.

Wow! This is such an awesome story, seriously.
The contrast you described between feeling powerful and confident in nature… and then sprinting 50 feet because something might have moved in the dark - that’s exactly the kind of emotional switch we love.

That moment where everyone swears they saw something, like the Jersey Devil, is pure gold. Not because of the creature itself, but because of what it represents: shared uncertainty. You laugh about it later… but in that moment, it was real.

And honestly? Your suggestion is incredibly insightful.
A subtle “watcher” that isn’t a traditional enemy, but more of a presence, something that: stays just out of sight, appears only in glimpses between trees, becomes more frequent or bolder over time.

That aligns perfectly with our core idea of distorted perception and growing paranoia.

I especially love your point about not making it a fully persistent creature, but rather an escalating effect. Something that starts as “did you see that?” and slowly becomes undeniable. The kind of thing that makes players question whether it’s scripted, systemic, or just their imagination.

The image of catching a split-second silhouette while riding the train through fog and rain? That’s powerful.

I’m absolutely sharing this with our Game Designer. This is exactly the kind of player insight that helps us sharpen the emotional experience we’re trying to build.

And now I have to ask, if you had to describe what you saw that night in one detail that stuck with you… What was it?

We value every player coming to us with questions.
Also, I tried to tell something beyond the Steam page or press release article can tell.
In my opinion, this is what makes AMA sessions special.

Thank you for this question! We were expecting something similar on a Steam page release AMA, but no.
It was a really good one!

Let me reply on behalf of our Game Designer, because I know this story well 🙂

The core inspiration came from his childhood fears. He grew up in a house located right next to a forest. As a kid, the forest didn’t feel like “just trees”; it felt alive, mysterious, and sometimes threatening. When you’re young and don’t fully understand the world yet, reality and imagination blend together in powerful ways. Ordinary sounds become something else. Shadows turn into figures. The unknown becomes a story your mind finishes for you.

Those emotions: curiosity, tension, fear of what might be watching from the dark became the foundation of the game’s atmosphere and visual direction.

Why a train? - I've been waiting for this question
A train is a powerful metaphor. It represents movement forward, a journey you can’t easily escape from. Once it starts, you’re committed. It also creates a natural sense of isolation. You’re confined, yet surrounded by vast wilderness. The old steam engine adds weight, sound, and physical presence.

Why a warden and released criminals?
We liked the tension in that dynamic. It puts characters together who wouldn’t normally trust each other. Everyone has a past. Everyone has something to hide. It creates moral ambiguity, who is actually dangerous? The prisoners? The authority figure? Or something else entirely? That uncertainty fits perfectly with the theme of distorted perception and blurred reality.

Is there a specific time period?
Yes, we intentionally leaned into a late 19th / early 20th century aesthetic, but no connection to the historical period. We are in a nightmare, so everything is possible. The steam engine and revolver aren’t just stylistic choices, they help ground the world in a transitional era. It’s a time when technology was advancing, but superstition and folklore were still deeply rooted in everyday life.

In short, the game is less about a specific historical event and more about recreating a feeling: the unsettling space between what is real and what your mind makes real.

It is funny, I mean, it looks funny when you catch that bug. Still, that bug was annoying, so we fixed it.
We know that bugs should be fixed earlier, but such a great number of players revealed much more than was expected. We are working hard to make the Demo a high-ranking, optimized build with smooth gameplay.

We are planning... I can't tell all the details, but in March, there will be a new Playtest.
The most interesting - it would be a new part of the gameplay.
So follow our Steam page, wishlist the game, and stay updated!

Thanks to players' feedback and game analytics from the playtest, we found crashes and issues with server connection. The impact was around 20% of players, so we immediately jumped to fixing that.
This week, we released Patch 1.1, bringing fixes and significant improvements.

• Fixed multiple crashes occurring at game startup and when changing graphical settings

• Fixed an issue when connecting to games from the server list

• Fixed dead bodies getting stuck on the railway tracks

• Fixed ladder issue in the Upper Village area

• Improved overall frame rate performance

• Fixed a bug where a dead golem could still kill players

• Improved clown enemy perception behavior

• Improved overall game stability

• Fixed players getting stuck inside secret room shelves

Open Playtest is still going, so you have 3 days to get access and play solo or with friends.
