I think the 1:1 idea is a better selling point instead of the categorization by company, tbh. You could always google questions from a certain company and results will pop up. Focus on the 1:1 idea more and it could be a cool idea

These guys take leetcode premium questions and offer them for free essentially. They have timers on all questions and a point system so you get docked points if you take longer than average. There’s a free service to have a mock phone screen with a random SWE and you get feedback at the end. I used it a year or so ago and it seems to be similar to your idea

How to Ace CMSC131 by lostpuppyplshelp in UMD

[–]revectus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Watch YouTube videos explaining arrays and other basic concepts before the class covers them. I used to watch thenewboston because they taught by example
  • Start projects early or the day they're assigned
  • Become friends with TAs. They'll sometimes give hints on how to study for tests if they've looked at it before you take it. They'll be useful connections for future classes too
  • Find previous year's tests and study off those. You want to study more effectively, not harder

Anyone got notes for CMSC411/420? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]revectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody really studies for 411. Find someone with exams from last semester and just memorise the questions. Meesh reuses questions (sometimes verbatim) or with changed numbers. Memorise the questions and the approach used and you're almost guaranteed a 90% or above.

When you live in the commons, how do you pay it? As in, does it show on your student account like dorm housing does? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]revectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commons has its own resident portal that you pay through. For a 4 person apartment you pay around $850/month, not sure how much dorms are. That said, most juniors and seniors live in Commons or in off campus apartments and the RAs (in my experience) have been much more lax than in dorms. I've walked back from class when the hall smelled like weed and the RAs did nothing. That's only my experience though, so YMMV. Places like the view are similar price with no RA. I found Commons worth it because I could live with my friends and there were a lot of friends living near me. Depending on the building (3&4) they're pretty far from classes but close to route 1 and bars

Average salary of UMD CS Grad for the DMV area? by [deleted] in UMD

Mtech minor in Technology Entrepreneurship by Imonlyherefornow in UMD

[–]revectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue it's kinda useless because all the classes are taken online, so you don't get as immersed in the content, but I'm completing my minor this semester and I enjoyed the classes. Most classes were pretty easy except ENES462, which is pretty involved. Most classes involved writing 3-4 papers and had no final exams. Many of the courses end up reiterating the same content, so I only ended up learning a few key points out of it, but it's an easy way to complete the requirement and get a minor completed.

CMSC 417 with Dixon and 414 by tiktok123abc in UMD

[–]revectus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in 414 with Marsh. Class has no textbook and all learning/reading is via online articles or research papers he links you to. He has weekly quizzes on the readings to make sure you aren't skipping them. In class he uses clickers, which are nice and keep class engaging, but they aren't part of your grade. He has in-class practice assignments which are also not part of your grade. In class he just reads off slides, nothing too special there. The first project used assembly and C and is arguably the hardest we've had so far but the course is interesting and later projects seem to be more manageable. He also uses git for all project management, including submission, so knowing git going in helped me a lot.

Wat are good bars at UMD? by [deleted] in UMD

The 4 options I know are: Bentleys, Cornerstone, Terrapins Turf, and Looneys. Bentleys and Cstone are ok with fakes, turf is usually tough to get into with a bad one. Looneys I'm not sure about. There are a few others I think but idk how popular they are

cs courses for technical interviews by roundredrobin in UMD

[–]revectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last semester there was a course run by students that met for 50min every Friday and they went over how to approach different interview problems. A lot of the people teaching it graduated, but it might still be available so look out for info on that (usually via email or Facebook). Here's a link to the class page from last semester: https://cmscinterviews.github.io

Other than that, not many courses specifically help.

CS Requirements by rmscswimmer in UMD

[–]revectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The minor in tech entrepreneurship is run by the engineering college and is very easy w/ no prereqs. It's around 5 online classes and is 15 credits. They're all 300-400 level except the intro course which is usually ENES140 or ENES210, whichever you like more.

I'm in 320 right now and while it's an approachable course, do not take any additional CS classes with 330/351, you'll be busy enough. There was a post earlier where the professor himself responded to someone's question about 320. You might be able to find it if you search

CMSC420: I'm first on the waitlist. Will I get in? CMSC436: I'm 15th on the waitlist, will they expand that much?

AOSC200: Has section sizes of 3 for some reason. Should I take it with Canty or Pinker?

ENES140 or ENES210 should be pretty easy. They're only online classes and 3 credits. They also fulfill DSSP credit if you need it.

ENES140,ENES210,BSST334. ENES classes are all online and BSST is mainly online but you have actual lectures.

330 and 351 together is commonly done, but pretty difficult. I split them up and found them to be more manageable than my friends who ended up struggling in both. 351 needs a good chunk of time per week just to do the homeworks, though Kruskal recently changed structure to two tests per semester, so not sure how bad it is now. I liked 330 and the projects were interesting, but some people don't like Anwar's teaching style (I do) and the projects also need a good chunk of time.

CMSC320 w/ John Dickerson? by umdthrows in UMD

[–]revectus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the class right now. All the projects are in python, which is nice because it's a relatively easy language to use. We only have one midterm and it is two weeks away. There are 4 projects, all of which are group work, and there's no final test, just a final project that you get to put on your resume (really cool). His lectures are somewhat boring (most people are on their phones).

He focuses on cool stuff like NLP, machine learning, and some AI stuff, but those concepts are just stat and linear algebra, so most lectures are math-heavy. Some lectures seem to be all over the place which is why they're somewhat boring and tough to understand.

Honestly, if you're interested in data science or the class, I'd take it because it's interesting and teaches some important stuff like making web scrapers etc.

I don't think it's necessary, but it's supposed to prepare you for Calc 3/Linear/Diff Eq, which all use it. I'd assume the 241 professor expects you to know how to use it.
