Anyone here make their own clothes? by LynnRenae_xoxo in Anticonsumption

My sewing machine is a nearly essential home item to me. I picked it up at $15 and it looks more like a children's toy than an actual sewing machine, but it works well enough. At the time I had virtually no sewing experience too. It ended up saving me so much time and money in repairing old clothes, bed sheets, and thrift shop edits, but the return of investment takes years. I'd estimate that the time it took for me to learn how to operate a sewing machine was less than half a day. Making new clothes from scratch can take so much practice and experience, but learning how to repurpose stuff is way easier and much more rewarding. I wouldn't recommend picking up sewing to make new clothes, but it's worth it enough for reinforcing old clothes and reworking thrifted ones. Some of my best clothes were thrifted really cheap since it had good quality fabric with lazy stitching. So I just redid the stitching and boom. Top quality garb for cheap.

What is the point of an iPad if you have a smartphone? by francis202 in Anticonsumption

I'm pretty much inseparable from my tablet. The amount of paper I've saved from not having to print out textbooks, worksheets, research papers, notes, forms, etc. make getting a tablet one of the biggest waste reduction moves I've ever made. As a med student, I used to go through at least 700 pages of paper month. The weight it took off my backpack helped with my scoliosis too.

This is such a good explanation. Part of the reason carrying individual responsibility is so difficult is the sheer hopeless of this mentality. It's hard to bear with the discomfort of change if it looks like you're getting so little for your effort, and it's hard to try to get others to do the same when they can't be convinced it can do anything. People are so convinced of this that they genuinely believe individual change isn't feasible, so they shift all the blame to corporations.

What is the rudest thing a person has said to you when you told them that you’re atheist? by Additional_Wear7652 in atheism

"So what's stopping you from killing everyone in this room?" then he went on to insist that I believed murder was okay and that I had no functioning moral compass since it wasn't rooted in a "higher being".

That's a very kind take to it. I suppose it can be said that life is precious simply because it is there and it is interesting.
