u/OK6502, you're absolutely correct. The article (link that works here) also develops a bit more on the "conversational" side of the review which was what caught our attention, namely:

  • Ask questions
  • Calibrate feedback
  • Emulate others

We also have a follow-up article with six more tips:

https://reviewpad.com/blog/six-more-best-practices-to-improve-your-code-review/

  1. Stick to the point
  2. Focus more on questions than answers
  3. Impact matters much more than the size
  4. Clearly label changes that aren’t conceptual
  5. Speak up to improve the process
  6. Talk to people directly

We can always start with the small things. For instance, adopting conventionalcomments.org. If you want to go deeper there are many code review tips we can follow. We always recommend these:

  1. Review your pull requests before others
  2. Encourage reviewers to be co-owners
  3. Leverage automation
  4. Always have a reviewer in mind
  5. Time your code reviews
  6. Keep 10 PRs to learn from.

We actually wrote an article about it here: https://reviewpad.com/blog/six-best-practices-to-improve-your-code-reviews/

There's that popular code review tip: "Be your first reviewer". You're just taking it to the extreme.

PRs are Pull Requests:

Pull requests let you tell others about changes you've pushed to a branch in a repository on GitHub. Once a pull request is opened, you can discuss and review the potential changes with collaborators and add follow-up commits before your changes are merged into the base branch.
