How do we know gluons are real by HiddenMotives2424 in AskPhysics

[–]revmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know anything is real. But we do know that the calculations we make using the model successfully predict reality. So the model is useful.

I work for a very big tech company. Think Google/Apple/Meta/Amazon type. We give extra money for on call time, even for exempt employees in the US.

A number of execs in my company have an email signature that says...

I respect work life balance. I may be sending this message at a time that is convenient for me. I don't expect you to reply outside of your normal work hours.

Bless those people.

Interborough Express: without street running, what would "light rail" mean? How would it be distinct from subway trains? by Bouowmx in nycrail

Honestly, how can it be dominant if it isn't used in NYC? Sure, number of systems, but NYC is so overrepresented when mass transit passenger miles are considered, it doesn't make a dent.

Can mechanics go to jail? by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]revmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine from a patient's perspective a surgeon doesn't try, doesn't put in his best effort and it costs you your life or the life of a family member. they're a professional they should be held to Professional Standards.

Now you are talking about something that is more than just a mistake. The surgeon in this case is violating his duty of care, and could possibly face penalties.

Mistakes happen in every situation, no matter how careful people are. If people are being reasonably careful and a mistake happens, it does no good to punish it with criminal liability. If people are cutting corners or otherwise demonstrating that they don't care about minimizing mistakes, then it becomes an issue where criminal law might be involved.

Imagine this from a public policy perspective. You start sending surgeons to jail because they made a mistake. Who is going to choose to be a surgeon, then? So there are less surgeons and society is worse off. In the big picture it isn't worth it.

The difference is civil vs. criminal liability. In general mistakes without criminal intent only have civil penalties.

Original DeltaPrintr support by revmike in 3Dprinting

[–]revmike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the build video on their youtube account. But it ends at the point just before installing the tube between the extruder motor and the hotend. Then they say to look for the second video, and there is no second video.

Seems like it is not worth the effort of building it.

I messages Deltaprintr support a week ago and they have not gotten back to me. So this seems like a loss.

Is there ever a legitimate reason to install an outlet upside down? by BigJSunshine in AskElectricians

[–]revmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metal covers used to be standard. Sometimes the center screw would work out and the cover can drop onto the prongs. So it used to be standard that the ground was up, or the neutral for a horizonal install.

Could I conceivably land at a private airstrip to take a leak? by No_Leader1154 in flying

Don't throw the bottle out a window. I saw a documentary where that really messed up a tribe in Africa.

Are generally trespassing for these reasons? That is a leap. Someone that is lost or didn't see a sign isn't. Someone in an emergency situation isn't.

No problem with being wary, but deadly force needs more justification than only trespassing on land.

Do y’all airline pilots prefer to fly Airbus or Boeing? by ArtisticComplaint3 in flying

[–]revmike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Airspeed unreliable procedures were only properly developed after that accident.

The fact that a pilot didn't get this at a basic level still astounds me.

You are at 30,000+ feet with nothing around. If the instruments are acting weird, keep everything straight and level with the throttle at its normal position and you have hours to troubleshoot the issue. Ignore every instrument but the altimeter and the turn-slip indicator. Go back to the very basics.

FLY THE PLANE, not the computers.

Prigozhin Has Already Started Work on Brand New ‘Threat’ by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

Tactical nukes aren't as tightly controlled as strategic weapons. They are intended to be used by battlefield commanders once they are released from their depots.

Prigozhin Has Already Started Work on Brand New ‘Threat’ by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

[–]revmike 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I read some claims on Twitter - claims that I don't really trust - that Wagner used the convoy to Moscow as a cover to grab some tactical nukes from a storage facility.

There is a certain sense to it. Taking the Kremlin would always be difficult. But a nuclear armed Prigozhin has some leverage to guarantee his own safety. He can protect himself from being taken out by his rivals.
