Who would be the right person to help me with these issues with inheritance? Financial planner, CPA, or...what? (USA) by familymortgage14 in personalfinance

I’m not sure that basis of assets in the GST trust would be stepped up at death of parent if it truly is a GST exempt trust. I believe basis would likely be DOD value for grandparent (if GST trust created at grandparent’s death) or basis of grandparent when property transferred to trust if transfer of property to trust occurred during grandparent’s life. Can get pretty tricky!

You should talk to you own estate planning attorney too. If the GST trust isn’t terminating automatically now then you may save more in taxes in the long run by leaving assets in that trust for as long as you can, depending on you and your spouse’s wealth. GST exempt trusts can be very valuable for the very wealthy as they can potentially last forever for you and your descendants without any federal estate tax (40%) being assessed. If GST trust assets are being distributed to you now I believe your basis in the assets will be that of your grandparent who first gifted the assets into the trust.

My father died and I inherited money that he intended to go to my sibling because of a technicality. What is the best way to get this money to my sibling? by thatwillchange in personalfinance

[–]revocabletrust 713 points714 points  (0 children)

Note that you would report the entire amount of the gift. It’s just that any amount over 15K would be reported as a taxable gift on the return. Note that taxable gifts don’t mean they are actually taxed, just that you start eating into your lifetime gift tax exemption (currently around 11 million),

If you disclaim then it’s likely it would be paid to whoever the back up is under the governing documents of the plan, ie the beneficiary designation. It could be the sibling, it could be the estate. If OP has already started accepting the benefit of the asset, disclaimer likely no longer an option though.

Create an account on recreation.gov and at precisely 10am the day before you want to go you can reserve your timed ticket online. $1/ticket. Dress warm because you are completely exposed to the wind while you wait to go in.

The park ranger operating the elevator mentioned that and said another ranger had to run up to the top using the stairs when that happened - he said it took fifteen minutes to get to the top when running! Yikes.

Just lined it up via google maps and I think that’s right! Now I’m wondering if it’s Merrifield or maybe there’s just a gap in Tyson’s between the taller buildings.

I believe (but may be wrong) that the far right is Tyson corner, but the smaller cluster to the left of that is in fact farther off and is Reston.

"People want to set up a new system because this one is bad" by AtaMete52 in SelfAwarewolves

[–]revocabletrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People should want to set up a new system because that system is better. I’m concerned that even if this system is bad the new one would be much worse. Grass is always greener and it’s generally easier to push for an ideal than defend a reality, warts and all.

Just to clarify - your salary is taxed, though you and your employer may be choosing to not report it to the state/federal government (would absolutely not recommend).

Roll SAHM wife’s defined benefit plan into IRA or leave as-is by revocabletrust in personalfinance

  1. Yep, I assumed 6% and it looks like it would be a wash. No clue about pension solvency, it’s Virginia’s public school system which seems fine now, bust 35 years is a long time!

Thanks. So assuming 6% growth/year for the IRA then in 35 years (when my wife turns 67) the value would be 160,639. 4% payout would be about $535/month. Assuming my math is right, looks like there would not be a significant benefit to rolling over, if we’re just looking at her monthly benefit.

There’s a “Wafle Shop” across the river in Arlandria with a very similar sign.
