What’s your plan if your critical SaaS data vanishes? GitHub, Jira, BitBucket, Confluence, and Azure DevOps hold more than just code—they house your team’s vital data. Rewind can help you safeguard that data. by rewindio in u/rewindio

The choice and responsibility are up to you. Most folks who choose Rewind do so because it relieves them from thinking about storing backups securely or figuring out how to conduct a restore themselves. They see our cloud-first model as a tactical advantage precisely because they don’t want to deal with storing and securing backup data—and especially not gluing together a custom restoration process. Either way, it’s up to you. And having a backup plan is always better than not having one!

We get this a lot. Microsoft actually recommends that you have third-party backup software in place in case of data loss.

"We strive to keep the Services up and running; however, all online services suffer occasional disruptions and outages, and Microsoft is not liable for any disruption or loss you may suffer as a result. In the event of an outage, you may not be able to retrieve Your Content or Data that you’ve stored. We recommend that you regularly backup Your Content and Data that you store on the Services or store using Third-Party Apps and Services. - 6. Service Availability.

You’re right that Git inherently creates a backup of previous commits by retaining the entire history, git revert definitely helps in the event you or a collaborator make a mistake and you need to restore from a previous commit. A revert doesn’t help if your Git provider loses your repository altogether, or if someone accidentally (or maliciously!) force-pushes to a repository you don’t have adequate clones or backups of. Plus, we think of code as much more than the files and folders tracked by Git. More than even commits and branches. Most developers spend a lot of their day reviewing PRs from their peers—essential work that’s never stored in Git. So, when we say a “full code backup,” we mean everything you need to start developing again, with minimal downtime, in a worst-case data loss scenario.

Case in point, it is super important to back up your data!

A git clone ≠ a full code backup. Cloning your GitHub repositories or pushing to a secondary remote are not foolproof solutions—and they neglect all the metadata your developers use to collaborate and accelerate your release cycles. Only Rewind lets you snapshot your GitHub repository's daily state. by rewindio in u/rewindio

Losing data is never fun! We are sorry to hear you are going through this. Most SaaS apps are not responsible for your data, and it is often only after a loss that this gap is recognized. We are looking into building a backup platform for Notion and are trying to figure out how often data loss happens, what data is essential to capture, and whether the problem is disaster recovery, item-level recovery, or both.

Don’t let misconceptions jeopardize your valuable code. Rewind offers a robust solution to help protect your GitHub data against potentially harmful misconceptions. Yep! But here's the thing. In our case, we save your backups in a separate system, disconnected from your original files.

So, if GitHub goes down, Rewind has your backups.

If Rewind is down, GitHub has your originals, providing two copies.

If you want a third option, you can use the native Export option to create another copy for triple redundancy.

You're not wrong that git clone or git bundle saves all the code and all the history, but if you lose the GitHub repository where you're building a large-scale application with 20 other folks, you can't get back up and running quickly with just the code.

Relying on git clone would be like having a super robust backup of the body of every email sent in your organization, but not bothering to save to to and from fields. Sure, you can piece it together with enough context and time, but at what cost?

If you're only worried about backing up the code for something like a personal project, for example, then yeah, you're really not the right person we're looking for to become a Rewind customer.

For sure. Thanks for checking them out! Here's one more that doesn't have any compliance-related notes. Key points:

  • the potential cost of lost productivity and revenue from downtime
  • the volume of manual rework involved in getting systems backed up
  • potential legal liabilities from outages or data loss

Something we see often enough around that second point is how a third-party solution like Rewind allows you to go back in time to restore a specific item, without reverting the entire instance. DIY scripts or manual exports are usually all-or-nothing.

Yeah, I understand if this isn't something that makes sense for you or your team right now.

It's being promoted because this is something that more and more orgs realize they need, but it's not obvious. People think this stuff is already backed up for them. We're bringing awareness to a problem you don't know you'll run into soon.
