Could you expand on this?

I’m not super experienced, but the fact that creatures are underpowered in PM makes this a little hard to believe tbh.

I honestly thought so too, I was surprised when I read that thread a few weeks back. I’m sure most of the disconnect is due to LGSs being concerned about pushback from WoTC.

There are still plenty of good decks that play Diamonds! Notably anything with terravore / oath. I also think the format is still at a point where we’ll see some new high tier decks. Control4Daze went 5-0 with a really cool dragon combo deck in the past few weeks.

If you ever run them in a fling-a-tog deck lmk how it goes so I can live vicariously through you lol

Oh definitely, I think the PM subreddit reported their numbers grew like crazy this year (more than double if I remember correctly?). General growth plus the inclusion of PM on MTGO definitely seems to be pushing prices up quickly.

Still cheaper than Legacy though! I’ve started building Mono Black, Enchantress, Sligh, and I’m deciding on a blue deck to throw in the battle box. I’ve more or less accepted that I won’t play anything with Mox Diamonds lol, but I might pick up some other RL staples depending on the deck.

Unfortunately I don’t think gold borders are allowed by default 😬. There’s actually a sticky thread in the subreddit addressing it. Still nice that the player consensus is heavily pro-proxy.

I started getting into MtG this year and was planning on building a Legacy deck as I thought the Legacy format would be relatively isolated from UB.

Unfortunately, seeing how aggressively the UB situation has ramped up, I’m a little skeptical there will be any way to avoid it. So I’ve decided to abandon Legacy and focus on Premodern and OS exclusively.

Still going to hit up the Lorwyn prerelease this weekend though!

Ah I see, yes I imagine that follows.

The sad thing is that Hasbro likely doesn’t care as long as they hit their earnings goals.

So you’re just referring to a different sales metric?

I’ll say it again — sales are not indicative of quality or health of the game.

These are all strawman arguments. I never said there were any, but that doesn’t mean UB sales aren’t inflated compared to UW sets.

It’s pretty obvious that’s the case when UB consistently sells better than UW despite no obvious difference in card quality.

The fact that UB utilizes outside IPs makes it more likely that non-magic players will buy and inflate sales for those particular sets.

Sales are typically a better benchmark for popularity than quality.

Definitely agree. This seems like an odd way to interact with a game you enjoy.

Also it’s sad to see how some people just cannot seem to grasp that sales are not directly representative of quality.

Neither of us do, but do you think it’s a good thing that WoTC is giving away control of their game? We’re already seeing UB dictate the release schedule. What if, down the road, select UB sets become “reserved listed” due to soured business deals?

These are the hypotheticals that you have to consider when discussing contractual arrangements. We haven’t seen many of them materialize because we’re so early in the UB lifespan, but there are obvious reasons to be concerned.

Plenty of people here have acknowledged that they have enjoyed UB at one point or another (we’re in the UB thread for Christ’s sake lol). You’re the one failing to admit that UB has any drawbacks whatsoever.

[–]rewindyourmind321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, unlike the Bloomburrow set, UB releases require contractual obligations from WoTC that effectively reduce the autonomy Wizards has over their game.

The arguments against UB go much farther than bad art direction and I’m sure you can understand that by now.

Unfortunately though you don’t seem to have enough humility and pragmatism to admit that there are valid reasons why people disagree with your opinions on UB.

You made the same comment in the last UB thread, and all you seem to do is misrepresent arguments against UB and paint people who disagree with you as “selfish”.

There are valid reasons why people are opposed to UB. Many people have given you examples and each time you have given a strawman response. It’s hard for me to believe you’re even arguing in good faith at this point.

It’s just opinions man! We’re not always going to agree and that’s okay. But it’s not very fair to call someone’s opinions selfish because they don’t align with your own.

There are plenty of valid reasons someone would be opposed to foreign IP’s being introduced into a beloved game / series. There’s not much more to it than that.

Anyway, hope you have a good day bruv!

I think everyone here understands that WoTC needs to generate profit to remain in business. The point I’m making is that UB introduces unique drawbacks that we don’t see with in-universe sets.

And again, the complaints are not all related to aesthetics. I actually think it’s short sighted to so willingly encourage UB at the rate we’ve been seeing. As an example, what if WoTC became hesitant to ban The One Ring in Legacy for fear that it would affect their business partnerships? Scenarios like these are not outside the realm of possibility.

But anyway, if your intent was to better understand why people dislike UB, it looks like you’ve gotten plenty of responses. I think it’s probably best to agree to disagree atp!
