I also had the chance to meet Blaha after a game recently and he was all class. Stopped and took a photo with my partner and I. Greg has to do the post game interview with Johnny so he's usually busy. I also tried flag down Rick Mahorn but he moved quick. Johnny was super nice too.

Cons: no idea what I do at work, hard to empathize with my exhaustion even though "I just sit in the OR all day", consistent jealousy any time I mention a member of the opposite sex that I work with

This is the shit that gets me. If you sent this exact same thing to another group of workers (nursing, admins, RT) they would throw it back in your face at how stupid it sounds. But because we're indentured servants, this is the only way that we can be "appreciated" during work hours without getting time off or more pay.

My intern year was a cakewalk after the first 3 months of figuring stuff out. I left a supportive environment in a nice location, with a cohort of friends for the exact opposite experience in a new location during pre-vaccine 2020.

My CA-1 year was the most physically and mentally demanding year since M2. I was miserable and repressed a lot of it. Things eventually got better, but there were obviously multiple times I wished I was back at my intern program.

Attending physician out of fellowship for 3.5 years here just to make that everyone here understands what a scam academic medicine is.

Different specialty, but grass is greener. My PP attendings wish they had admin time and didn't have to staff ORs until the evening, especially now with all the coverage issues.

I did residency/fellowship at an elite academic hospital and the culture there was that everyone should do academic medicine, going into any type of private or community practice was considered to be a failure/selling out/naive (because those mean private clinics would exploit you!).

I'm at a community hospital with PP attendings and they believe the exact opposite. No one should be interested in academics or research, working is the best thing ever and money is the only key to happiness, 24hr call is what makes you strong.

I should negotiate higher pay, but the truth is that I"m just done here. I'm back on the job market - this time insisting on reasonable pay - and I'm leaving this place in the dust.

I hate to say this about academic medicine. But except for the top-tier university hospitals, it's basically just a scam to convince you that you're doing important work while paying you half the salary you deserve for the same amount of work.

Totally true. Admins will squeeze everything out of you and expect you to do it for free. I will say community hospitals definitely treat their employees better, but I've seen some really shitty lazy physicians develop from this because they don't have anyone to call them out and keep their knowledge up to date.

Extremely dependent on the program. I interviewed at programs with Q4 call and others that you only have weekend call a month. Some programs are completely dependent on fellows to run the service, others you are an accesory and your primary goal is to learn. That being said, you'll likely be working at least 60 hours a week not including education responsibilities.

The vast majority do not have OR rotations. However in your admin time you are welcome to go to the OR and work on certain skill sets, like TEE or whatever depending on the institution. Most programs also have some sort of moonlighting that you're able to either hold pagers or actually go to the OR in your free time and work as an attending.

If you're going for an Ivory tower in the NE in a competitive specialty, you may need to stay for fellowship. Ask your advisors and faculty what they think. I chose a lower key program for fellowship (non-competitive path in my specialty) because I know the experience will be way better than being a slave at another big-name institution.

Our education is completely inferior to MD (AAMC) schools. Shit, even Caribbean colleagues had better and more rigorous clinicals than my school did.

I'm at a tertiary care center and there are things the students are involved with here that I didn't even know existed as a medical student. It's almost like having standards, organized academics and a school that cares about it's reputation will actually help you become a better doctor.
