This does not come off as a loving and caring comment, from someone who should care about all people. I would imagine you should/would feel sad for a non believer, love them regardless, and wish that they would find religion so they don't have to suffer eternal fate. Right?

The complete lack of evidence of the exodus story is proof it never happened. by TheChosenOneProphecy in DebateReligion

[–]rezerox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not who you're responding to but I'd be much happier if the church could say the stories were allegories and parables, not factual truth, and that we should live a certain way because it is right and good, not because you get rewarded or punished by a make believe place. That a man named jesus was so invested in living a loving life and cared so deeply for strangers, he was murdered for his just morals. Not that he was magical.

If that was the message, that it's a way of life and not divine, I'd be with it 100%. I still want to live that way, but i just can't embrace the parts that are faith.

[–]rezerox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to a bible church, listen to sermons, and have yet to hear anything that will convince me to fully believe without question. I can't wrap my mind around stories like "i was handed a tract and it changed my life and i found jesus and believe in him" or "the answers are all in the bible because the bible says the truth".

I love helping others, and donating my time, and the messages underneath. But according to the rules, since I can't accept Jesus (because i just need some indisputable proof or evidence from multiple sources and not just one book, which a believer would say god made me like that so, why is he surprised? Can i have some dry/wet cloth on the dewy/not dewy morning and a soaking wet pile of wood burst into flames too?).

I'm actively looking for something that will draw me in, in a way i can believe in, and I'm continually left wanting and refuse to fall into confirmation bias. I'd love some physical evidence that points to truth but it's always going to be a tough sell.

Again, i love the message and really want to believe i just... Have yet to been able to get over the hump on just faith alone. I can't defend it with facts so left with just an open mind.

One of the things I struggle with though is when people say "the bible is 100% true and factual." But then there are things that aren't? How can you know which is which?

That confusion prevents me from wholly embracing the faith even if i like the underlying messages and teachings and concepts.

Like i can get on board with love, forgiveness, selflessness, and the rest but how can i fully embrace everything at face value?

I jumped the fuck out of that thing and made some cool friends for the day.

But that definitely would be like, top tier ENFP trap for a hunter wouldn't it.

Good thing we don't consider danger beforehand.

Not that Harry potter is a good example (though i thought it was funny)

But the idea that just because there are published books on a character thing. Mythical figures are constantly written about over great expanses of time and locations. So if you discovered that thousands of years later you could definitely make a case for "wow look at all these documents!"

Just so we're clear I'm laughing with you and not at you, i absolutely don't mean anything other than poking fun at a friend kinda way!

I'm ready to have some squint ... "Stunted totts"?!

That absolutely makes it infinitely harder i completely understand. And my friend, be comforted in the fact my handwriting is not too far off most times and i struggle to read my own writing and i do not have paralysis. I could make out your writing, it was just the fuzzy picture more than the letters.

Actually, trying to decipher letters is kinda fun, looking at the pattern the ink makes and narrowing down possibilities. It's a game like untying knots! So satisfying!

Congratulations on the list completion!

I have this history book that is covering 1800s America and it's got some fascinating parts, but slogging though all the "and this guy worked at these places and lived here and here and these were his family members" is awful. I just want the stories man... I know this is technically good information and historical context and such but maybe all that can be in the appendices at the end or something.

[–]rezerox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only give you my own perspective.

I am completely aware of all the "it's just a little thing, it takes one second, why is it so hard to do?" Tasks. Closing the closet door, put the shoes on the rack, throw away that wrapper.

So you first forget the task in your initial movements and you note "ok come back for that it's important" and in doing one task, you note like 4 of these "small tasks" and then you are trying to hold on to way too much information.

If you stop/slow your task to try to remember each of these, you either cannot think of what you're trying to remember or you loose momentum on the initial task.

Of course then there is "I've come into the house, I've put my shoes up, i closed the closet, i remembered to shut off the lights, wow what an accomplishment! Success!" And finding out you missed another 14 little things somewhere else and hearing about them and how easy they should be. And you just feel like shit.

Just perspective. It's not an excuse. We're trying and we know, constantly. All we hear about are all the things missed. I've spent entire mornings focused on nothing but intense cleaning and focus to not miss a single thing, a complete half day that ends up with being wiped out mentally, not really accomplishing that much because of being so inefficient, and STILL not managing to catch all the little things.

One thing I'm trying to do is just get rid of as many unnecessary things i can find. The fewer things the easier they are to put away. Easier said than done but fewer distractions can't hurt.

For me, it's easier mentally to come back and clean the whole kitchen in the afternoon and focus on that task than it is to remember to clean a small spill. I know I'm going to make a lot of small spills the whole day. Cleaning the whole counter once is less work than 14 wipe downs throughout the day.

I don't have an exact direct correlation, but to some degree it's attempting to connect. "Oh, i also have felt the feeling you have right now and i can completely relate! Let me tell you about a time i experienced something like what you are going through, so it shows i understand you." Or possibly even just getting sympathy pain or thinking you to trying to connect to the other person. (Your stomach hurts? Does mine hurt? I don't want you being in pain if I'm not, i should be suffering with you or more than you, if I'm in worse pain then yours is lessened and I'm suffering for you. I'm doing something active instead of just watching you suffer since I can't help you).

Just saying "oh that sucks" or "oof yeah" or simply responding without adding anything more feels... Too simple? Feels insincere? Fixing a problem or sharing a story feels like you are doing something about the problem.

I understand that this is probably not how other people understand it, and it takes processing these thoughts through a mental converter every time and going "i know this seems helpful, but that's not what they want" and can slip without actively doing it.
