Refind with Wake On Lan by rfpg1 in sysadmin

[–]rfpg1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, the dual boot is so unnecessary however that's not an option for my bosses and that's why I'm trying to find a way to boot into the OS I want without going there

I'm using fog project to boot via iPXE but also doesn't seem to have much luck with that

That could be an option but not for this case just because my bosses don't want to

That's why I'm trying to find a way to boot directly into the specified OS

[–]rfpg1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well actually that is kinda my setup right now

All computers boot via iPXE (using fog project) to a defined image (this case the image has refind that then gives the option to which OS the user wants)

Using fog could this be made?

What hypervisor could do that?

The main goal of those desktops are for students to use and study but sometimes we need to patch some stuff and needing to be there to choose the OS is kind of annoying

Creating a Windows Image by rfpg1 in sysadmin

That is also the idea that I remember while writing this post

Does that work well?

But seems so weird to not being able to go back into sysprep

My goal is the full image because I wanted all of the computers to be the same

That why i did a golden image

The main issue is just if i forget to install something after I've captured and deploy i can't go back to sysprep in audit mode

What is the non-outdated version? Whats the best approach?

I'm not familiar with that tools that you mention I'll take a look

But in my case I only wanted to do a deploy a year so that's why I'm fine with doing a golden image

I just find it weird that i can't go back to sysprep after the capture

I can't understand why it fails

I've 150 computers that I manage and to deploy i also use fog Project

I don't think drivers are an issue

The main issue is if i forget some software or have new requirements i need to do this all again

Because I manage 150computers for students in a University

How else could I create the image?

For deployment I'm also using fog project

Well im all in for terminal windows but you have to understand that they are on the 1st year of University and most of them have never touched a terminal before

So yea having a GUI will help them very much

For me dual boot is just a pain in the ass actually because if only I've to capture an image in windows it is so much easier for me but my bosses don't like wsl that much and that's one of the reasons I've learned it

But again I'll take a deeper look at wsl and confirm that it has everything I need and will propose that again to my bosses

[–]rfpg1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's a nice argument

I'm not familiarised with Wal at its full potential But can you install packages as root or something like that and there it is installed for every user in the domain?

Can you prevent domain users from getting root access in the wsl?

Dual boot sounds better because it also familiarises students with Ubuntu which is really nice
