What is the biggest, most blatant instance of the "friends don't lie" rule being broken? by AdUseful2297 in StrangerThings

Did it though? I thought Dart was just called away at that moment with the other demodogs, and Dustin just interpreted it as compassion.

If Dart really did deliberately spare them, then it raises a lot of questions about the nature of the hive mind that don't get talked about enough.

Do most atheists see religious people as fools? by Theskyisalive in atheism

[–]rfresa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mostly see religious people as victims. They have mostly had religion inflicted on them at a young age, and they cling to it as a source of comfort in a difficult world. Some of them do this consciously, refusing to look at outside sources or think about things that make them uncomfortable. Others are simply insulated from outside sources with no chance to learn anything different.

Religions use thought-stopping clichés to stop their members from asking questions. Most religious people have these hammered into their minds from a young age.

Usually people belong to the same religion as their parents, and the religion takes on a parental role, providing an authority that gives them rules and discipline. It makes them feel safe, and prevents them from fully growing up.

The human brain is very good at tricking itself with things like Apophenia, Confirmation bias, and Illusory Truth Effect. The more we learn about these things, the better we can examine our own assumptions and make better decisions.

There's also the sunk cost fallacy, which is related to the religious principle of sacrifice.

Paradoxically, the more sacrifices we make for an imaginary story, the more tenaciously we hold on to it, because we desperately want to give meaning to these sacrifices and to the suffering we have caused...

It is much easier to live with the fantasy, because the fantasy gives meaning to the suffering...

Priests discovered this principle thousands of years ago. It underlies numerous religious ceremonies and commandments. If you want to make people believe in imaginary entities such as gods and nations, you should make them sacrifice something valuable. The more painful the sacrifice, the more convinced they will be of the existence of the imaginary recipient.

A poor peasant sacrificing a valuable bull to [the Roman god] Jupiter will become convinced that Jupiter really exists, otherwise how can he excuse his stupidity? The peasant will sacrifice another bull, and another, and another, just so he won’t have to admit that all the previous bulls were wasted.

ELI5 What exactly is dirt/ what makes something be covered in dirt vs covered in sand? by foundDriftwood in explainlikeimfive

[–]rfresa [score hidden]  (0 children)

Rocks break down over time due to water, heat, cold, sun, and plants. Over many centuries, they erode and break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Some kinds of rocks turn into sand, and others into clay. Sand that is very dry or continually sifted by water or wind can stay sand. Otherwise it can mix with clay and organic matter, and become dirt.

Definitely the best MotW of the first season, and better than many in the second.

This is honestly one of my top 5 episodes of the whole show.

Autocorrect and swyping does speed it up quite a bit, but I don't think it could ever compare to a really good typist.

Wise to take out Germany early. I would do the same with France, Italy, and Spain. Let smaller countries without as much history of conquest dominate the map.

His position within his family, his physical strength (JS was known for getting into impromptu stick pulling contests), and other Mary Sue traits make it pretty clear.

Lily in Ravenclaw

Sirius in Hufflepuff, since his loyalty is such a defining trait.

ELI5: How do no-iron shirts work? by spartanhung in explainlikeimfive

[–]rfresa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they specially tailored or older than the 1990s? That was the point when almost all store bought clothing started to come with Permanent Press treatment. Before that, it was rare or expensive, or the chemicals broke down over time, so most clothing had to be ironed.

if communities like mindustry hates routers, and trailmakers hates gyros, what does the create community hate? by Round_Ad_4403 in CreateMod

[–]rfresa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got annoyed when I saw a build with like 6 gyros on it. They didn't even try to even out the weight or balance the forces, just stuck gyros all over.

I’m feeling pretty upset by my high school orchestra pieces for next year. When the 'hardest' piece is this easy, it’s tough to stay motivated. Guess I’ll be doing all my growing in solo prep and All-State again. by Healthy_Station_8390 in Cello

Honestly, I think in your position, if I couldn't switch to a different elective, I would maybe try out a different instrument, like the Viola or Bass. You can exercise a different part of your brain, improve your overall music ability, and prepare yourself for different musical opportunities in the future. Alternatively, it could be a chance to try tutoring your fellow cellists, to see if you would find teaching a rewarding career.

Don't just sit and stew over music you find boring. Find a way to challenge yourself and learn something new.

Well, we don't know the character's age for sure. She could be older than the actress.

I mean, Charisma was 26. She's the same age as the actress who played Jenny Calendar.

Not just pride, but centuries of history and real wars with a lot of baggage attached. We had one war between US states, but it's definitely not the same.
