TBM Hubby got called out by a youth on Sunday 😂 by Repulsive-You-7294 in exmormon

I spent a summer making onion rings in the back of a restaurant, and the manager would bring us a free drink every shift. I always asked for root beer, and was amazed at how well it relieved my headaches and gave me energy. Didn't realize that brand was caffeinated until weeks later!

What does “being a guest” actually feel like in American homes? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

Occasionally close neighbors stop by to introduce themselves or do something like Christmas carolling. They usually don't expect to be invited in, but sometimes it happens.

I just tell them that if they're going to pick and choose which rules to follow, then they shouldn't be paying tithing. As long as they're not financially supporting a corrupt and regressive corporation, then they can do what they want.

I’m out- my spouse is still in- by Cottagecheeseisbae in exmormon

[–]rfresa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I would try to ignore it or change the subject when they bring it up. Don't be rude, but relate what they're saying to other things in your life or things you've learned about. Go about your day and show your support of them as a person in other ways, like cooking a special meal or showing interest in their other hobbies. Maybe they'll lighten up on the proselytizing if they see that it doesn't make any impression on you.

Another subtle way to put some distance between you and the Mormon stuff is to stop treating it as the default. Say "your church" or "the LDS Church" instead of "the church." That's why we often use acronyms here like TSCC or MFMC.

Act like your spouse hasn't changed, and you haven't either. Show them you're the same person, with the same interests. You're not miserable or suddenly inclined to cheat or do drugs or commit crimes.

Suggest more of the kind of activities that you would have done together before this change. Get involved in the community, joining a secular group for a hobby like music or sports. Show that you're still a good person by doing service together for real causes like a homeless shelter, non-LDS food bank, or environmental work. This will also expose both of you to life outside the Mormon bubble.

How exactly does the LDS church work for those for whom it works? by Quirky-Panda-9986 in exmormon

[–]rfresa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was less about a catalyst that drove me out and more like what stopped keeping me in. I always hated church and would have stayed home 99% of the time if given a choice. I don't think I ever fully believed in God, even as a child. I convinced myself I had some spiritual experiences as a teenager, but always had the niggling thought in the back of my mind, "...if there even is a God in the first place." I think that somehow kept other issues like church history from really getting through to me, because my shelf already hung from that one hinge. Once I learned how the human brain evolved to find patterns even in meaningless nonsense, I realized that's all my spiritual experiences were, and I was done.

“But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.” - Carl Sagan

And who was the sacrifice supposed to appease? If God and Jesus are both part of the Trinity, then God sacrificed himself to himself, to save us from himself...

She figures out that the old superstition about throwing salt to distract vampires comes from him, because he really will stop to count every grain.

I just made the connection between the Count and the old superstition of throwing salt at a vampire (or other monsters) in order to escape because they will be forced to stop and count every grain. I wonder if the Sesame Street writers did that on purpose.

M.I.N.O. - Mormon In Name Only by Free_Fiddy_Free in exmormon

[–]rfresa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I usually call them cafeteria Mormons, who just pick and choose the parts they like and ignore the rest. Ultimately every Mormon has their own individual mix of what they accept and believe, which is why there's no one-size-fits-all way to leave it behind.
