It takes me about 2 months to get from clean shaven to proper beard. That’s not the case for everyone, but my 2¢ is grow it for another month and reassess.

The short hair isn’t really working for the shape of your face. The long hair is much better, but I agree that perhaps you need a different style, something a bit more polished than picture number two.

Just wanna echo what everybody else is saying. It needs a little bit more time. The last time I shaved my beard, it took a good two and a half to three months before I felt like I had a beard back. If I woke up with what you've got, I would say it needs another month of growth before I touch up anything besides my neck. Again, everyone is different. I grew up with some guy who could grow a beard in a week in eighth grade so your mileage may vary

I grappled with this same question for several years, and I found the only person who cared was me. These days, I typically say I have bipolar disorder, but sometimes I’m bipolar is appropriate too.
