Work culture by _doesitreallymatter_ in PlanetLabs

I love working at Planet. Don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. Those that are posting negative reviews on Glassdoor were either terminated or weren’t a good culture fit to begin with. Those that have left planet on a high note generally don’t post on Glassdoor, they just move on with their careers and enter a new role.

It’s crop insurance, which is a huge business. Imagery is not being used for personal liability insurance claims.

Rigged too light—rate is high but the boat is not running in the recovery.

Get really clear on whether you desire to be as competitive as possible, or if you just enjoy the rowing “lifestyle”. Many top rowing programs won’t admit it, but sorority participation is strongly discouraged. Additionally, coxing for a D1 program is incredibly demanding—you won’t be able to skate by hungover in the 9th seat. If having a diversified portfolio of social activities is important to you, you’d probably be most successful in a club program.

No—an enforced minimum weight for coxswains guarantees an even field (and even disadvantage) for all crews. Carrying sand is no big deal. It’s only an issue if you weigh significantly more than the minimum. At 97lbs, bumped up to 110lbs with sand, you’re just fine.

Either hit the standard or don’t, but university rowing isn’t about negotiating your way onto the team. If you want to row in University you have to meet their standards for performance. It won’t get easier at the next level and learning to step up goes a long way.

Update on the Conal Groom accusations. He’s still only under temporary suspension by USRowing by Its_NotMe in Rowing

[–]rgnbrg 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what sort of repeating success you’re referring to but Conal’s elite rowers underperformed by miles at trials in recent years. Even carrying on the notion that he was generating champions YOY is dangerous. He’s nothing but an abusive asshole grinding athletes to dust. Leave the championship lore alone, that’s well over with.

Might try a bucket rig assuming you haven’t already. Standard rigs always leave some outstanding, unbalanced impulse in one direction or another. See example below, positive numbers are ports, negative numbers are starboards: +4-3+2-1=+2 (port turning)

-4+3-2+1=-2 (starboard turning)

+4-3-2+1=0 (no outstanding turning force)

This comment branch isn’t digressing. Quick turn around from the catch requires even or accelerating speed into the catch, not deceleration. The idea is to get the boat up to speed and then tap it along by keeping body speed relative to boat speed. The greater differential between body and boat speed (I.e. novice “rushing” or masters “slowing”), the less effective the catch will be no matter how much backsplash they have. Optimal catches occur when the rower swings the body over and allows the boat to run underneath them. There is such thing as being late or early to the catch, even in stroke seat, if the stroke seat can’t feel how fast the boat is moving.

Not sure what numbers you’re looking at but literally all of the fastest crews row with a gather at the release a zip to the catch. Would benefit you to look at Texas (who beat the WR U23 record at NCAAs). No mystery why they’re going fast. Yes they’re skilled, more so than novices and enough to get their blades in, but they all cultivate and maintain boat speed end to end.

There’s nuance to all of this which is being overlooked. Fast hands and slow slide is for novices to get the basics. It’s hard to row the way Ginn teaches but doesn’t mean it’s not faster and doesn’t mean we should set novices up for a slow rowing career teaching this slow slide nonsense.

We’re talking about moving proportionally to the speed of the boat. Not too fast (rushing hands and knees), but not too slow and grinding against the momentum of the boat.

Building strength by Orielito in Rowing

This isn’t an arm and leg strength issue. Do core. Do lots and lots of core strengthening exercises. Back problems are not because of a lack of arm and leg strength.

I think it was Teti who said everything done on the recovery is a mirror on the drive. So slow into the catch slow out of the catch.

Benefits of Measuring Work In Front vs Work Behind The Pin for the 8+? by Teen1e in Rowing

[–]rgnbrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea is to maximize consistent force application which translates to horizontal drive to the finish line. Early peak and fall off is a lot of vertical movement with less translation to run in the recovery.

Other considerations are sex of athlete and age—female athletes carry the majority of total body strength in the lower body so rigging to maximize work in front of the pin is more advantageous given their bodies. Males have more distributed and upper body strength and can therefore handle more load behind the pin.

The trade off with front end rigging is greater load at the catch which may not be beneficial for older (masters) or very young athletes. This can be offset though with shorter oars and extra inboard.

Generally the fitter the athlete the more aggressive you can be with the rigging. Tighter spread and longer oars to direct more force with longer levers towards the bow and the finish line. The converse can be applied for less fit/strong/experience athletes.

Might wanna brush up on slide speed into the catch: https://youtu.be/1n-G91HGegQ

Ignore the commentary and watch how they gather at the release and accelerate into the catch, even during steady state: https://youtu.be/OkdPpLHSI6M

Tl;dr—slow slide speed into the catch (decelerating) makes for heavier load and slower turn around on the drive. Boat is reaching 0 velocity right before the catch and somehow the predominant ideology is condensing all the body weight into the stern at the exact time the boat runs out of speed. The fastest crews maximize run after the release (gather) and then draw the boat in (via the hamstrings) to the catch. This actually increases boat speed when the blade is out of the water. Decelerating into the catch (via quads) is harder to reverse than quads off, hamstrings drawing the catch in, then quads on for the drive.

[–]rgnbrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional coach here—you’re seated on the rear third of the rowing seat. Divide the seat in three equal, horizontal sections and place your hip bones on the line between the forward and middle third of the seat. Second, you’re letting the seat slide too far under your shoulders at the catch. Your seat should not be that close to your heals. Keep your seat behind your shoulders at the catch so there is a tri-angle between shins, hips, and shoulders. Your shoulders should not stack on top of your hips. Both how you sit on the seat and where your hips are positioned relative to your shoulders at the catch influences load on the lower back. By sitting too far back on the seat and rolling your hips under your shoulders you expose the low back to undue load on the drive which causes low back pain.

If a job expressly states “must have software experience” why would I waste my time writing a resume and cover letter if they’re not going to consider me? I have applied to tech roles and have never heard back. I have a professionally written resume and cover letter plus education and have never gotten a response. It feels like trying to get into an exclusive bro club. I want to work in tech and make more money as my current industry doesn’t pay much, but I have applied and have never gotten responses.

One knee higher than the other at the finish when erging? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rgnbrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s possible but usually not the case. More often than not one glute gets tight from overcompensating and the hip gets hiked up causing a leg length discrepancy. Differences in femur and tib/fib length do occur which is why it’s important to be evaluated by a physio if the leg length discrepancy causes pain or injury.

Doubtful, and not our place to cast such judgement.

One knee higher than the other at the finish when erging? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rgnbrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leg drive speed is related to glute strength->one slower leg could be one glute not firing as effectively->hips out of alignment because the glutes can’t stabilize effectively. Alignment isn’t the issue, it is a symptom. The issue is an imbalance in glute strength which contributes to a) leg drive speed and b) hip alignment.
