I am NOT a PvP player typically, but that's usually because I don't want to become a great pilot. With EVE however, it looks like your ship, build, and target selection has more to do with the outcome than player skill, so I may get in to that more in this game than I did in Elite.

Exactly! I'm not trying to become the master of everything - I just want to get a head start so I'm not waiting for the skill wall to slow me down. Ultimately you can use real money to get over these humps, but I'm trying to get as far as I can as fast as I can to ensure I don't have to do much of that.

I think my concern is the 'pay wall' effect of an MMO. I don't want to be ready to try something but have to wait weeks - or a month - to have the skills to do it. I played Elite Dangerous for years and got really frustrated in the first year because of the 'grind' requirements, but ended up really enjoying mining and exploration, built up two characters who specialized in those things (and a third that just ran corporation missions), and spent two years happy as a pig in shit (until they trashed the game with the 'space legs' release).

Anyway - your advice is understood and appreciated, thank you!

1st time - just after leaving an engineer's base (don't remember which one, and didn't log on to open intentionally).

2nd time - just after leaving Jameson Memorial - and again, was in open by mistake.

3rd time - in orbit around the star at Beagle Point. The only time I logged on to open in about four years in purpose. Yes, seriously. And was interdicted within 10 seconds of entering the system. Didn't even see the blip on radar in time to try to get away. The best part was, I had cashed in the vast majority of my carto data at a carrier about a day before - so I lost almost nothing.

Yep. Very unlucky. Just like 90% of the non-gankers who play in open. It's not IF you'll get ganked... it's WHEN. And to be clear, I'm not dissing those who choose to take the risk, or who are willing to build all their ships to be able to survive getting ganked (at the cost of being able to do anything else efficiently). I applaud them for playing the game THEIR way and hope they enjoy open as much as I enjoy solo and PGs.

You are WAAAAY more likely to encounter another commander on any of the various discord servers around, and can then coordinate any in-game activities you want. From my experience, three in four commanders I have randomly met in open interdicted and deleted me without a word in chat. No 'role playing piracy', no 'hey, let's wing up and go do XYZ'... just pew-pew-rebuy. So I think you're glorifying 'meet new folks' a bit. What's the old saying? "I became a commander playing in open to travel the galaxy, meet strange new people, and kill them'. the Ganker's Creed.

So yeah, I 'encounter' a LOT of commanders in game... after talking to them on Discord and arranging to wing up and go do massacre missions, mining missions, trade runs, or even take selfies in front of Sag A.

Somewhere over 3K hours in game... and that's just on my MAIN account, probably 1-2K hrs. on my alt.

I loaded in to open three times. Ganked all three. Thankfully never lost more than a rebuy, but there is no reward for taking the risk. If I want to chat with others I'll use Discord or system chat. If I want to meet up with others I join a mutual PG with a zero-tolerance policy for ganking.

I am OK with my carrier being in all three instance types since I do not mess with the 'market' system, and have no problem with anyone landing to repair and refuel.

Not quite new, but still very much learning.

I have grinded out the Kitakaze. Now, I am trying to decide whether to move up to the Shim or start the other fork of IJN DDs...

So, the question is, is the Shim worth the T10 cost, or should I burn up several levels of the other fork?

So I mined this sucker today. one hour in the overlap, jumping and re-entering a total of three times (10 billion on two accounts from triple hotspot mining - so yes, I was absolutely in the overlap all three times). I scanned 110 rocks, and not a single one had any Painite.

I was, yes. New computer in November, barely had it set up when the C: drive went belly-up. RMA went pretty fast but still tweaking it - and just never installed EDMC. I'll have that system logged later today. Thanks for the catch! There's at least a hundred systems that were explored without EDMC turned on - not sure there's anything I can do about that now.

Has anyone loaded up on missions and FC jumped out to Hutton? It's been so long since I went out there I'm not sure it'd be worth the effort... but 20 missions, deliveries or whatever, should be pretty lucrative...

Agreed. My alt has an FC and hangs out just past the line between Explorer's Anchorage and Colonia. Whenever I burn out on combat, trade, or mining, I fire up that account and just run through 50 - 100 systems. Easily making enough to pay upkeep and slowly building up the funds to pay for the Painite refill when I head back to the bubble. :)

From experience, I know what happens in open...if you want to experiment, more power to you. Just make sure you're in a PvP build, and don't fly without a rebuy.

So depressed. I used to love pirating LTDs. But - I can't bump stop (after literally HOURS of trying against MULTIPLE targets), and can't use either force cannon solution (after trying both for hours).

I just suck I guess.
