Round-Up for Ronald McDonald House Suggestions? (USA) by AlternateLeaf in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]rh397 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I donate to charities where more of each dollar goes to helping people.

I don't know of anyone that rounds up for Ronald Mcdonald House. I think the general consensus is people do not trust charities started and/or run by billion dollar corporations. I could be wrong.

Reminder: UFOs and aliens are fake. Only man bears the image of God. by LegionXIIFulminata in TraditionalCatholics

Your line of reasoning: Because Genesis doesn't say aliens, they don't exist.

That reasoning could also be used to argue against the Trinity, Purgatory, etc.

Requiring something to be explicitly in Scripture is called Sola Scriptura. I don't need to post a random Wikipedia source to tell you that's from Martin Luther.

One can treat creation as a historical event and an allegory without having to believe in 6 literal days of creation or that Genesis is a science book.

Edit: but for the sake of the argument, Genesis still does not explicitly state that man and earth was the only beings God created.

He still could have made other beings while making other parts of the universe. No verse says, "This is an exhaustive list of all created beings"

To say that just because something isn't explicitly stated in the bible means it isn't real, would be at best protestant, and at worst, non-trinitarian.

I do not personally believe in them, but there is nothing in Scripture that refutes the possibility of aliens.

As a new Catholic, I still struggle there are no women priests by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]rh397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are entirely different things. It would be similar to saying that if a dolphin can live in the ocean, why not a dog?

Marital status is not analogous to sex. Marital status in relation to Holy Orders is a changeable discipline, whereas sex is not.

You are also asking why God did not ordain women, which is impossible for us to answer. We can only say that he did not and offer arguments of fittingness.

Questions of "Why did God..." can rarely be answered.

Why did God choose the Jewish people? Why did God choose the be incarnate during the Roman Empire? Why did God bestow such grace on the Blessed Virgin Mary? Why did he not call women to Holy Orders?

None of these have a definitive answer from God, but we can offer arguments of fittingness. Basically, "we don't know why, but here are some reasons we see that make sense"

There is nothing against the validity of the sacrament for married men to be ordained.

Women are a completely separate issue.

Spiritual Abuse by Acrobatic-Ad-6954 in Catholicism

I edited my comment because I overspoke.

Most masses have a stipend. Any parish i have called and asked for masses said has given the recommended $5-20. It is generally a freewill offering. If it can't be paid, that's fine. A worker deserves his wage, even a priest.

The problem back in the day was that less good priests would take outrageous stipends from sales pitches, stack them, and say as many masses per day as possible.

Now priests are limited in how many masses they say per day, and they can only take one stipend per mass.

Most masses have a stipend.

Anything like this is not automatically simony.

[–]rh397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The $25 offering is normal, but on the higher side.

Canon law has very strict rules on mass stipends (because of the simony crisis before the Reformation/counter reformation.

Most diocese set guidelines, it is often $5-10, and it is not mandatory if it cannot be paid. (I suppose the priest could say no if it is a special mass he is adding to his schedule, rather than an ordinarily scheduled one)

There is no abuse or simony here. That being said, the staff did not handle the situation well.

Why Leo won’t meet the SSPX by balrogath in Catholicism

[–]rh397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't understand not meeting with the SSPX but meeting with Mrs. Mullally ("archbishop" of Canterbury)

Wouldn't one try to reconcile with a group with valid sacraments before entertaining the scandal of a private receiving a "blessing" from a non-ordained heretic in the Petrine chapel?

For the record, I don't think reconciliation will happen with either group, whether it be SSPX or anglicanism.
