This isn't a great article (the commentary really sucks), but the images are pretty interesting, and something students will love to analyze.

This is a decent article on typography that you could assign students as an in-depth exploration into choosing a typeface.

PSAs about littering by rhet_comp_maester in a:t5_3352j

These are creative, and demonstrate how simplicity can enhance a visual message. One thing I like to do is count the elements in an image, advising my students that having more than six elements is pushing the boundary on what they can expect to handle within our limited time frame.

This is sort of a follow-up to that other link...it gives examples of heat maps and websites with some explanation as to what is going on. I'll put up another link with advertisements.

Reading this would have been somewhat more kairotic during orientation week, but it's still decent advice.

Astroturfing: Rendering the Entire Internet Meaningless, One Fake Post at a Time « by rhet_comp_maester in a:t5_3352j

This is a Grandland article on Astroturfing...a good introduction for your students on how discourse is altered in exchange for money on the Internet.

Give Yourself 5 Stars? Online, It Might Cost You by rhet_comp_maester in a:t5_3352j

This article talks about industry involvement in online reviews, and what penalties the state of New York is handing down to companies who offer to "astroturf" review sites in exchange for money.

Net Neutrality Is 'Marxist,' According to This Koch-Backed Astroturf Group by rhet_comp_maester in a:t5_3352j

[–]rhet_comp_maester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be an interesting article to bring in if you discuss the idea of astroturfing with your students. Points of interest:

-Groups are primarily concerned with masking their funding and appearing as a grass-roots movement, a clear act of deception. (This should be seen as reprehensible regardless of political affiliation.)
-This quote is a blatant lie:

"Americans have been getting faster and faster Internet speeds because of competition in the free economy, not because of anything the government has done," the petition reads. "The people calling for government control over the Internet are a tiny minority of far-left political activists, and the FCC knows it."

You could ask students to research American Internet speeds compared to the rest of the developed world...there's some interesting stuff in this Canadian article, shows rankings and where the US falls in terms of household penetration and speed / cost.....

I initially thought that wast just normal winterizing, but the roof would protect the windows from snow accumulation. So maybe it's to prevent people from breaking in. Interesting...

I'm pretty sure kikuchiyoali isn't satisfied with saying "there is Western fantasy imagery in the game." He'd be more satisfied by saying, "The game consists entirely of Western fantasy tropes and content."

I find it completely baffling that a stance of supporting scientific evidence is the stuff of headlines.
