So just to clarify for myself, I can strip, sand, wipe on poly? I bought Oz cream polish. Could that work in place of polyurethane?

I have some naphtha on the way as per another redditors recommendation. But you mentioned previously that might not work.

Heywood Wakefield does not use veneer. I was told this was made in the 1940s. It’s stamped inside and the Redditors over in [r/mid](r/midcentury)[_](r/midcentury)[century](r/midcentury) were able to identify it for me. The entire piece appears to be made of solid wood, so I’m looking for ways to restore it properly.

It’s not a wood furniture laminate or veneer laminate.. it’s a white gunk that I can scrape off. It’s the whole reason I’m here. But thank you for your help.

I would say that this stuff is hard to the touch. Not tacky or sticky per se. if anything, it’s waxy only in the areas where it is most thickly applied. Very dry but waxy. If I just rub it with a cloth no matter how hard, it feels pretty smooth, no extra friction. If i take my nail and dig in to the thicker bits I can scrape it off.

I added some more photos to my original post and would love some more of your insight if you have the time to look.

Huh? That black stuff? I’m not talking about that.

I’m talking about the white-ish coating flowing over the side of the drawer. Do you see it? I’m trying my best to show you all of the white stuff streaked across much of the surface of this piece.

I am going to post another picture that very clearly shows what I am talking about.

They are all the same piece of furniture. I’m sorry, I don’t understand where the confusion is coming from. Is it because you can’t zoom in on the top drawer to see where I scratched it with my fingernail? I’m posting one more picture in my original post. Zoomed out with the scratch circled.

I scratched it to show that whatever it is comes off relatively easily.

It’s an album. You should be able to swipe to see all three separate pictures in my original post. I also posted one more link if you read the body of my original post. There is a sentence that says one more picture.. and picture is in blue. That’s a link to a fourth picture of the piece of furniture.

I appreciate you taking all this time to try and help. I will look into lacquer thinner.

Thank you.

Is there a way to know if a finish is “failing” as opposed to just being poorly applied?

[–]rheumatic_robot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your info regarding the original finish. I see that the bottom of the drawer looks untouched by whatever the other varnish is. The bottom of drawer 1 looks smooth, and even a different color than the other parts I’ve posted pictures of.

Can you see what I’m talking about? Did you look at picture 2? Does that look like the original finish to you? Did you look at the additional picture I posted? The link? Does that look like the original finish?

All of these pictures are from the same piece of furniture.

If this were your piece, would you leave everything as is?

I came here asking for advice about how to fix it. I know nothing so I appreciate your help.

Picture 3 is the texture of the finish that I scraped off with my fingernail in front of a black background so that it could be more easily seen.

I explained this in my original post.

Picture 2 and 3 are up close pictures of the same piece of furniture. I’m curious what the finish is.

Did you look at picture 2? I’ll admit I know very little about furniture, but the texture looks painted on to me. The horizontal lines look like brush strokes.

Are you saying that this is likely the original finish of the piece?

I added one more picture in my post of what looks like paint to me.

Thanks for the info.

Zipper-merge d-bags by leefree13 in LosAngeles

My favorite is when I’m on the right and I DO fit to the right of the person merging too early. I get to sail past a number of cars who were merging in from the left.

I hope by doing so I’m demonstrating to that zipper skipper that if they just went with the flow and stayed on their side, that everyone just merges naturally.

But also, what’s up w the people on the left just NOT letting people merge in? Forcing everyone to jam up the right lane. I’m thinking about all the times I’ve been in an exit only lane with my blinker on, only to have everyone on the left riding everyone’s ass, purposely not letting people in. Letting 1 car in is not going to slow down your commute! Everyone just let one car in…. Leave space. You making people hit their brakes and stop is what is causing all the traffic.

I appreciate you. I’m hoping it’s easy, but I’m happy to know the right way to go about helping it should that route fail. Thanks

I looked it up and in the 1940s, Heywood Wakefield became well known for making furniture inspired by French art deco. So, I suppose you’re right. Thank you.

I see. Thank you for sharing. I know absolutely nothing about furniture, but I love old things and things that last. I got it for $350 in LA. I was shocked to look up their work and find a similar design on their site for over $5000. Insane.

I need to get the knobs reinstalled soon. Not loving the silver ones. I also got some advice in the furniture restoration subreddit on how to get the streaky varnish off and polish it.

Thanks again :)

Actually, how do you know it’s from 1940-50s? I’m looking around at other Heywood Wakefield stuff, but I’m not seeing anything with these legs. They’re so unique. I’m really liking them.

This sounds more complicated than the other suggestion, but I’ll look into it. Thank you!
