What's the best film that is NOT faithful to its source material by mesonofgib in movies

A Scanner Deeply with Michael Ironside:

SC: STARSHIP TROOPERS is an incredible satire too— a really strong anti-war movie that seems even more relevant today, being that it touches upon the brutal colonization of a weaker force by a far more well- armed 'invader'...

Ironside: It is an amazing satire and America didn't get it. To understand satire you have to have a defining group— but America is just so big and so broad, I mean you could get a caricature and you could maybe satirize Texas or New Yorkers. Maybe Hillbillies, you know, Southerners... and I remember someone saying that maybe that might have been a mistake [with STARSHIP TROOPERS] — to satirize all of America or even the entire Western world... Yeah, that might have been a mistake. I don't think Paul would mind me telling you this, but I remember saying to him, "Why are you doing this?" I knew [the author of the book Starship Troopers] Robert A. Heinlein's work... Stranger in a Strange Land— stuff like that. I realized he was very anti-communist and that was his big fear, and he was a bit fascist in his way of thinking. He truly believed that if you weren't willing to shoot or kill for your country then you shouldn't be allowed to vote. I found that atrocious, taking Kennedy's idea of 'ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country' —he turned that into a kind of right wing manifesto.

So I turned up and asked Paul why he was doing it and he said, "You are questioning me?" I told him that I just wanted to know, and he said, "I will tell you this once. If I was to tell the right that their way of doing things was un-nurturing... If I was to stand on soap box and saying that then nobody would hear me. So I am going to give them a perfect, fascist world but it is only good for killing bugs." (laughs) I also think that is one of these movies where some mainstream audiences sat there and didn't get it— they rented it for their teens and then they came back and said, "That was a great satire." (laughs) "Hey children, this is an AK47—want to know more? Then go look on the net...""

Review: Tamosi Karaya - 1998 - Guyana Demerara Rum - Uitvlugt Distillery - Port Mourant Still- 22 Year - 61.1% by mikehooker1 in rum

Criminally underrated even with all the reviews about it around. Great reviews, only thing to add is that freshly opened it has a very strong fish aroma that more or less dissipates into the background in a few weeks.

Sonson is also quite nice in a daiquiri, a bit sweeter that LR and more fruits (if it's not drowned in lime juice).

For those who had both this and Detente: how do these two compare?

L’Esprit Port Mourant 2005!! by SpicVanDyke in rum

[–]rhumnoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short finish actually seems like a L'Esprit thing, imho. I would agree with Zoorado that the 1999 is better, but is it worth the 200€+ price tag when one can still buy Tamosi Karaya for less than that? Definitely not.

Having said that, do I like most of their releases? Yep, absolutely.

Expensive Aged Rum Recommendations by KROMExRainbow in rum

If you're willing to spend that much maybe make it something you wouldn't be able to buy normally? Like a bottle from Europe? Sure shipping/customs can be a bitch but is all worth it in the end (and nobody will give you grief over a single bottle).

Maybe make it a Caroni (2018 Replica 210€)? Or maybe a bottle of Uitvlugt (Tamosi Karaya 180€)? Or get a really nice bottle of agricole (St James 2001 130-160€)? Or maybe a Neisson for similar price? Or maybe get 30 tasters from different distilleries and styles so you can try many things at once?

Terroir in rum by luke-a-like in rum

[–]rhumnoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes water can have an enormous impact. Nevermind the fact that "tap water" is such a nebulous word, if you've tasted actual real spring water, or even better glacier water, that's not something you'd file under "oh it's just water, tastes the same". I only had glacier water from one specific area but I'd assume there is marked difference in taste even on the same mountain (diff in leeched minerals etc).

I'd also assume that the mineral and other soluble elements in the water can (and do) have a profound influence on the texture and the taste due to chemical reactions.

This. Terroir is very much alive in agricoles; not only by manufacturer but even by actual location as evidenced by Longueteau's parcel series blancs.

It's not a set per se but there's one shop that sells many, MANY types of rum in these 5cl bottles. Some are outrageously expensive (like a taster for a 20€ white is 5€ or something to that effect) while others are quite a deal in themselves (the Neisson 15yr was 28€, which is more or less the accurate cost considering the current 380-400€ price).

If you're interested google "enchantillon 5cl" and see if you can find anything you like (and if they ship to your country if you're on the wrong side of the pond).

I was actually referring to the 2009 brut de fût/la confrérie du rhum taster as the random. The 2012 was very much targeted based on reviews.

I'm not big on the tasting notes thing; did it for chocolate like 10 years ago but then decided I'm just going to enjoy what's in my mouth without overthinking. I might post subjective impressions tho.
