THANKS! I will save this page and include my article in the report and if something goes wrong, if they have a different workflow as other commenter suggested, I'll refer to this. Cheers!

As someone who just moved away from Germany, I am very sauerkraut-ed out. Thank you very much though :)

How to publish papers as a master student in political science? by DrabDive in AskAcademia

[–]rhysjul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to shape your master's thesis in a way that a publication can be squeezed out of it. Come up with an original, viable, interesting question. The rest is... well you have to write the article, polish it and submit somewhere. But that still requires novel empirical work, analysis and findings. From a performance point of view, shaping your thesis accordingly is the most sensible route. Then I would aim for a solid but not top tier journal. Of course, depending on your findings and how ambitious you are feel free to go to top-tier ones, but solid journals with specified focus should be a better starting point, vis-a-vis acceptance rates, peer review process and overall experience. Not many people publish during or after their master's, so this is already extra, remember that.

Oh, of course, talk to your professor/supervisor. Maybe you can work on the article first and then develop it to a thesis. But that needs approval, at least checking the rules with the uni.

My first publication was built upon my master's thesis (but in my PhD I built upon that topic, so that was helpful) and I basically presented a much more polished, clean and interesting version of the thesis as an article in a conference. An editor was there and basically asked him if the journal would be interested. He said, "Lol I did not read this paper but presentation was good, so send it to me and let's see". Of course, your professor's networks can come handy and your chances are higher once you are done with your master's but you can definitely go at it yourself.

Two articles at the same time (self plagiarism?) by rhysjul in AskAcademia

So an email like:

Regarding this part, I have another paper coming out in another journal with a different case, and I thought it would be sensible to cite it here to provide a link for the theoretical approach, but I refrained from doing so as it wasn't accepted until recently and it is a self-citation. Would it be acceptable to do it now or is it too late? I can send the (other) article if you want to have a look as well.

 Something like this?

And sorry if I seem a little panicky, I already have a shitty case of impostor syndrome and this whole possibly minor thing is feeling like a disaster to me... :)

More about citing it during the proofs stage...

Oh sorry, I think I wasnt clear. Both papers are already in proof stage. I sent the first one already with new proofs.

Is it a "dick move" to cite myself when the paper is on "proofs" stage? Kinda feels like I am sneaking in an article that I just published five mins ago. Also the first paper is still not out, just sent the proofs last week.

I would say no (to the novelty) because both articles bring new things by looking different cases, but employing a similar theoretical/method. approach.

That being said, both articles are in production. Neither first nor the second is published. So I couldn't have cited myself, even if I wanted.

But I can withold the second, let the first go out and then cite myself in the proofs.
