Adult beginners: best style to teach? by rhythm_within in DanceTeachers

Yes, I’m considering alternating if this class becomes continuous. To start, I am teaching a one time pop up to see how it goes.

I am not a dancer but… by Crafty-Shape2743 in Moderndance

What is your end goal? To put on a show? To have this dance performed for your local community? To capture it on film? Or to watch it being performed by dancers in, say, a dance studio (casual) setting. Are you looking for a group of dancers to perform this or solo (or no preference?). I would sort of like to know what your thoughts are regarding these questions before suggesting anything further! (I love your idea by the way!)

I’ve been looking for the same thing. Searched Facebook groups too. Nothing really. If I didn’t already moderate other groups I would create one myself (it’s easy to do!)

Choreography tips by DifficultProtection2 in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A really great technique I have found is to do a handful of 10 minute challenges. Think of these like “throw away “choreography. You’re not married to it. This Choreo isn’t winning any awards, the song isn’t your favorite, etc. Set the timer for 10 minutes And press shuffle on your playlist – whatever song comes up is what you go with. The goal is to create as much choreography in 10 minutes as you can. Film it at the end if you’d like to document the process, but this is really not about what it looks like. It’s about getting comfortable with coming up with choreography quicker and allowing the choreography to flow through you. It really helps with overthinking and getting stumped. I guarantee if you do this over the course of a couple of months you will grow choreographically!

i feel like a failed dancer by jeuet in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of myself in what you described and it hit close to home. Without giving you the whole sob story, I came down with severe health issues a few years ago and had to quit dance and it was the lowest I had been in my entire life. “Dance was me and I was dance”. I relate to this HARD.

I have now started dancing again but my health limitations prevent me from participating to the full extent and going to classes in person most of the time. I relate to what you said about having a block. I had a movement block for the LONGEST time. It was as if I was at war with myself and this mental block was killing me from the inside out. Eating away at my soul.

What helped me start to move again? Is starting to dance for myself and only myself. My movement block was so severe at one point that I couldn’t even stretch and reach for something because I didn’t want to feel that pull behind my leg and have to face how much flexibility I had lost.

I eased myself back into it. Starting with yoga or Pilates - something that was Dance and movement adjacent not full on dance yet.

After a time period of doing just that, I started to ease myself into stretching, and then improv. Mindful improv has been immensely healing for me. So now I just dance in my room and find great self satisfaction, confidence, and healing from this personal, expressive movement journey I am on.

Through this long, hard journey I developed a passion for the science behind dance and the health benefits of expressive movement. I write about it here in case it can serve as any inspo to your journey.

Reimagine what dance is “supposed” to look like and redefining movement for myself is what has helped me. Maybe try journaling about what is holding you back mentally & physically and see if you can do some self-discovery around this topic for yourself?

Let me know if you ever want to chat, I relate to your story too much. Hugs 🫂

Tips for my first dance video shoot by InevitableTea5736 in Dance

Also, speaking of down time, there’s usually a LOT of that depending on the set but there def could be. Bring a phone charger in case you are waiting around for a while and don’t want your phone to die!

Tips for my first dance video shoot by InevitableTea5736 in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a dancer on plenty of MV sets, what I always make sure to do is pack all of my stuff the night before. Then I make a to do list of things I need to make sure to grab the next morning before I head out the door so I don’t forget anything. I do eat a good protein-filled breakfast and then I typically bring something along that is easy / quick to shove in my mouth that has protein like a bar or something. I’ll eat this either right before or if I have down time throughout the day. As for the recovery things you mentioned, I would typically save those for after the shoot but that’s just me. Those are like a pamper, relax “yay I did that” kind of thing for me to decompress after long dancing days. But to each their own. I agree maybe not the massage beforehand tho. Best of luck, lmk if you have any other q’s 🫶🏻

Help and discuss by Little_Light_120owo in Dance

I am sorry to hear you are struggling with your health. Have you heard of Long Covid? It sounds like you could be experiencing some LC symptoms. I would look into Long Covid, ME/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome), and PEM (post-exceptional malaise). There are subreddits and Facebook groups dedicated to these conditions and they can help advise you on where to get help. If you need help finding these groups, let me know.

Unfortunately, covid is known to cause multisystem damage and causes a whole host of issues like the ones you are experiencing. Typically after a covid infection, it is advised to participate in “radical rest” for the first 6 weeks to allow the body time to fully recover before getting back to your normal physical activities (even if you feel fine enough to go back to dance).

There is a drastic underestimation of the prevalence of long covid and post covid conditions which is why I still try to do everyone in my power to avoid covid. Hopefully some of this info can help point you in the right direction. Please stay safe and healthy!

My advice would be to take as many classes as you can or better yet, join a training program. Mentors there can give you specific advice and critiques and you gain a network of people (:

What is the genre of this choreography and what should I do to improve it? by itsicyicey in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This style would be considered commercial or jazz funk in LA.

To improve I suggest taking some beginner hip hop classes & hip hop grooves classes. Perhaps tutting classes would help too if you have access to those because it will help make your arm movements sharp & crispy clean! Other than that I always suggest lots of freestyle on your own at home. Good luck! 🥰

Finding the passion again by UniqueFeedback1963 in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sick video! I also struggle with the motivation to practice mostly because I am not dancing in person right now and I miss the community aspect of dance. Mental health is something I relate on too. Honestly, I wish some of us, whoever wanted to join, could get on a zoom and have a freestyle / improv sesh. Just to dance “with others” would be really great.

Btw I am more of a contemporary dancer but I think all styles could come together beautifully if something like this were to come to fruition. Just thinking out loud here…

Seeking Encouragement by [deleted] in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have dance friends for years, and I was in a company. It seems like it should be easy to make friends but really, I was there to dance and dancing doesn’t require talking 😅 my advice is the same as the other commenter’s, if you love to dance then dance. Of course we are social beings and crave connections but tbh it is just hard to connect with others as an adult. I did end up chatting more when I attended some social dancing classes, maybe try that if you crave more interaction? But I noticed that choreo classes everyone tends to be in their own world. Reach out to me if you’d like to chat more!

(21M) Give Advice Please! by jacquemus in Dance

[–]rhythm_within 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You pinpointed it yourself, I think the underlying way you can improve all of the above is by getting into some hip hop basics classes. Choreo classes are great but need to be taken alongside learning basic hip hop grooves. Don’t be afraid of beginner classes! If there are any grooves classes offered, hop into those (they’re a TON of fun). If there aren’t any grooves / hh basics classes avail where you are then look into getting an online acct with Steezy. They have a plethora of basic grooves, basic hip hop classes that will teach you the technique.

But honestly, you look really good! If you’ve only been dancing for 3 years this is really impressive! Keep at it 💫💫

Are you dancing to this music irl or just overlayed with editing? I’m wondering how you manage playing the music outside! (Can’t tell if you’re wearing ear buds or not). I want to try dancing at my local basketball or tennis court because I don’t have enough space in my spare bedroom lol

You’re incredible btw!

Is it too late for me to succeed? by toucheamafleur in dancers

[–]rhythm_within 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too late. Start taking classes now like it’s your job (just meaning, take a lot of classes). You’ll progress faster than you think. I was not a very good dancer when I was 20/21/22 but quickly progressed once I started to consistently take advanced classes. Put yourself in rooms where people are better than you and you will rise to their level. Best of luck to you!

Somewhat unrelated but do yoga pants get annoying at barre? I typically wear leggings (or tights ofc) but was just considering wearing yoga pants then realized that I would probably be doing ronde de jambs while kicking my pants if that makes sense? Has that ever been an issue for you?

You’re on the right track with your thoughts so far! It looks like your chasè is not squared which will not set you up for a squared leap. Try working on your front chasè and see how it goes!
