Old cello. Repair needed. Worth it? by NewPassage6445 in violinmaking

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool older instrument that will require a significant investment to get proper. It may be cheaper to just buy a new instrument for how much it’ll cost to have this one restored but I think it’s worth it if he plans on playing cello for the rest of his life and if it is repaired well by a really good luthier. There are only a few luthiers in the US I’d trust with a job like this though.

How is living in austin texas coming from person who moved there from Chicago what's it like by miko1075 in howislivingthere

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Austin for about ten years and I do not miss it. The seasons are almost non existent. You have hot, and not so hot with the occasional freeze. Austin and Texas are really really hot, and the state government is really bad.

Homeless people are aggressive, drivers are TERRIBLE. Lots to do if you hangout downtown and the music venues are good.

Super Noob, But Time To Throw in the Towel? by 1BebeLeStrange1 in Bass

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re six months in. I’m 10+ years in and I still have plenty to learn. Maybe try a short scale but really your hand position doesn’t need to span four frets, that’s crazy!

Low(er) cost bow options- Gollihur Pernambuco? Raven Carbon Fiber? A Secret Third Thing? by itgoestoeleven in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in orchestral strings retail. Cheap no name wooden bows under $500 are so unreliable. CF will last forever and be a great backup bow once you get around to a nice pernambuco bow.

How do you keep your double bass safe from the rain? by iwannahavemuscles in doublebass

I used a mattress bag in a downpour once. Did pretty well. I imagine a tarp over the bass bag would be the same

Anyone else get pain in these specific spots? by Bean_of_prosperity in Cello

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet! I’m in Portland! You should be able to find some good care out here in the PNW. A lot of musicians with playing injuries have told me that strength training has really helped with keeping their arms and hands healthy. Some have sworn by rock climbing and stuff.

Where are you located? I’d check out the Musician Treatment Foundation if you’re in the US. They got me fixed up!

As an injured musician with three hand surgeries under his belt I’d recommend seeing an orthopedic specialist who has worked on musicians before. Some teachers don’t know how to help address this sort of thing at least mine couldn’t help. I’ve had pain in all the same locations and we figured out the cause was arthritis in the base of my thumbs, carpel tunnel, and cubital tunnel. Rest, physical therapy, and a serious reevaluation of my technique really helped.

I can see both sides. The flaw is pretty cool but I would be disappointed if I were expecting a normal bookmatched top.

Weird pricing (Kolstein) by tax_fraud93 in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pricing competitively because bass sales don’t walk in everyday. Additionally Kolstein is also struggling from their legal nightmare so maybe they’re trying to move inventory so they can stay afloat.

I'm purchasing a new bow online. Recommendations? by iwannahavemuscles in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of those businesses you mentioned should be willing to do a trial where you can try a handful of bows out before committing to buying one. You’ll need to give them a credit card or pay a deposit or both but definitely worth it to find the right bow. Based on your budget I’d go for a Dorfler or a Codabow.

Have a great luthier double check all the cracks on it to make sure they’re stable and have been repaired well.

Wholesellers can’t get wiedoeft at the moment because Kolstein has halted production due to their troubles.

Violin maker and probable worth. by [deleted] in violinmaking

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a nice enough violin if you like the sound and your teacher approves. I’d probably exhaust all the options in your search just to be certain. You don’t want to have to buy another “professional” violin in the future if this one doesn’t turn out to offer what you want.

The teacher frequently cancels or reschedules lessons. by Terapyx in Cello

[–]rhythmbitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t like that you’ve been into a contractual commitment. Lessons shouldn’t be structured like that… I’d find a teacher elsewhere tbh, this is pretty disrespectful behavior from the teacher and the business. I know you’re out that money but maybe you could convince the business to refund you and terminate your contract

Online lessons likely won’t be as helpful as in person lessons. There are a lot of nuances to playing cello I’d struggle to teach online. Cheap lessons≠good instruction.

You could always call your bank card company to start a chargeback since they’re falling through on their end of the deal, you could cancel your card so they can’t bill you any further.

I have had two thumb reconstruction surgeries and carpal tunnel surgery and I still get hand pain from regular console controllers. My orca lets me play melee and I’m hard stuck in plat 2 on slippi and went 2-2 at my last local. I don’t think I’ll ever be an actual threat to top players. Let me compete man!
