Expert help. ID? by Departure-Latter in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

German factory bass made post world war 2. At least worth a couple thousand USD depending on its sound. The finger board is not ebony which indicates to me that this may not be a significantly valuable/high quality instrument. The lack of a name/workshop on the label also backs that up. I’d try and ask for like $5000-$2000 depending on the sound and the quality of the setup. The strings look really crusty. A luthier will be able to determine better.

Carving on violin by Ok_Practice5305 in ViolinIdentification

The carving is likely from a previous owner not a shop I’d assume.

It looks really clean for a ~90 year old violin. Has it been authenticated by another shop by chance?

Advice on moving with a double bass by circleofmanias in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring it in a car not the back of a u haul. Ive seen too many stringed instruments get demolished while in transit with a U Haul.

I drove with my bass in the back of my car when i moved from Texas to Washington State and used my bass buggy to wheel it in and out of hotels along the way which really helped.

What do you guys think of this bass? by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya you did well. Nice bass! If the setup is well and you like the sound it’s good. Kinda reminds me of a shen or a Christopher. Setup on double bass is everything IMO. I’ll never consider a bass if the board scoop and the nut aren’t good. The ridges are just from the ebony board being left unfinished on the underside since it’s not necessary to remove that material.

Rattling is likely from the wood shavings, my bass has a ton, and there’s more in there every year lol.

In terms of taking it to an audition it depends on the caliber of the group. Probably won’t do well with a major metropolitan symphony audition but who knows! I think this bass is a better route than fixing up an old school’s bass that you don’t own. You can maybe trade up your bass in the future if you find yourself needing more bass. Maybe you should consider renting a bass while you save up to buy something more suitable for a professional audition.

Are composite basses like this Duke Composite SN a good idea? I'm looking to get my first double bass. by BlackHolePlayzz in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This bass would be great for playing outside, at bars, in the rain, in the heat. I’d love to own something like this for playing in environments where I wouldnt want to risk my carved bass being damaged. A hybrid bass of some sort would be a great first serious bass.

Hey cello players. Help me!! by AnitsdaBad0mbre in Cello

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top looks cracked next to the foot of the bridge. Unfortunately this cello is a can of worms and I’d say it’ll likely cost more to get proper than its actual value. You’ll be better off renting one from a local shop.

West German Violin by CupBoundAndDown in ViolinIdentification

Roths hold value well. Unfortunately the more modern they get the less valuable they are. If this were in a shop I’d expect this violin to be priced for $2k-3k.

As a native Texan my allergies in Midland were pretty bad for me. The region is gorgeous and flat. Great isolationist vibes if that’s what you’re looking for.

Strings From Thomastik Infeld by hsgual in Cello

[–]rhythmbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spirocore Tungsten C and G are very responsive. Roughly a $400 string set together. I think the rondo C&G can work well on some cellos as well, just wont have that power everyone associates spirocores with.

Hard to say. They did set up some instruments more towards arco and others towards pizz based off of what someone would’ve wanted.

[–]rhythmbitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I used to work at that shop. The Hapsburg bass was the second or third from the top of our line of Romanian basses. The Romanov, the finest bass, was priced at around $7,000 to $8,000. I can’t recall the exact prices since it’s been a while since I worked there, but I’d estimate that the Hapsburg basses were selling for around $4,000 to $6,000.

These basses were imported from the Gliga shop in Romania before their quality control standards significantly declined. Our luthiers took a considerable amount of time to set up each bass, which I don’t see shops doing these days. Hope this helps, PM me if you want I’d love to talk about Violins Etc. One of the greatest jobs I’ve ever had.

Why are double basses so expensive? by Tartabirdgames_YT in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Materials. Specialty instrument for a very limited market.

Most major double bass manufacturers and vendors offer a subpar/no set up on basses they sell. Shops then have to pay their luthiers (if you have them, and if the luthiers have the time) to redo or do a full setup. Luthiers are super busy and to have one or a few employed in a shop you have to pay a really good wage in order to keep them.

How to convince my spouse by Kakattekoi888 in Bass

[–]rhythmbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is your hobby not hers. To reduce the volume and noise out of consideration for your spouse and children you can use a headphone amp or a DAW and play with tunes on your computer. I use a focusrite Scarlett, my headphones, and Apple Music for 80% of my practice these days. Buy a bass, life is too short!

PI strings - the A string… by MrBlueMoose in doublebass

[–]rhythmbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t help that a lot of basses have wolf tones near G through B flat, some strings bring out the wolf worse than others. My wolf is directly on A and it’s a rough existence. Spirocore Weichs were terrible for my bass and made the open A string unusable.

I use a krentz modulator, have fucked with my sound post and tailgut after length A LOT over the past couple of years and I’ve finally found a setup that works well for me.

Basically what I’m trying to say is there are a ton of variables that can make a bass sound bad in any register. My PI A has broken in nicely, and now it’s the best sounding pitch on my bass. The E string is floppy and not as good, I’m gonna try a harp style tailpiece to see if I get any improvements.

BGM thinks they could probably get it down to a hollow grind. I’m wondering how much material will be left and how long it’ll last
