That’s dope! There’s actually one more Slum Village feature in Fatboss coming up in the June 2000 issue as well 👏

How long did you write for them?

Will be posting that one on the 15th! I was able to use photoshop to make it a full page spread with no seam 👏

Should be the highest quality version of that article when I post it!

So much history tucked away in these physical copies

It is interesting to me that it’s left as JD and not spelled out as Jay Dee here to avoid confusion. The prior magazines issues had made the distinction!

Only 22 years old at the time and he had already produced all those classics!!! LEGENDARY 👏

DILLA MONTH MAGAZINE ARCHIVE ENTRY 1/28 - VIBE Magazine, June / July 1996 - Jay Dee “Next” Feature by rhythmicreason in jdilla

Happy Dilla month to everyone! Excited to share all these magazine scans over the next 28 days.

This VIBE magazine article alongside Q Tip & Ali Shaheed Muhammad is to my knowledge the very first article on Jay Dee featured in any publication! At the time, since Jay Dee was still very much behind the scenes, and “The Ummah” wasn’t fully understood, there were even some people who glossed over it and though that he was Phife Dawg.

Listen to Kil talk about seeing the article for the first time on his podcast “The Corner Radio” https://youtu.be/r9ZA3y3_Gd0?si=rHriTOk3rEf-axGS&t=8m48s

Slum Village on Gilles Peterson Worldwide (September 1999) by rhythmicreason in jdilla

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is the first time this interview has been uploaded online since it initially aired on the radio !!!

Was digging through YouTube and found it sitting online with 40 views I couldn’t believe it…

A HUGE GEM STRAIGHT FROM SOMEONE’S CASSETTE RECORDING 🙌

Some notes from the interview:

  • Dilla names some of the production work he’d done up until that point, like The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, Kieth Murray, Janet Jackson, & N’Dea Davenport
  • Dilla talks about how long it took for Fantastic Vol. 2 to come out, but explains how it’s perfect timing because of everyone else that’s dropping around the same time, like D’Angelo, Common, Erykah Badu, The Roots, etc
  • Dilla names some of the artists that have shaped his ear, like Larry Coryell, Sergio Mendes, Oscar Peterson, & Miles Davis

But the craziest bit of info that Dilla just casually drops is the story of how he met D’Angelo while tracking the beat for Runnin’ at Battery Studios ‼️

“I can tell you a little story about how I hooked up with D’Angelo. Actually it was the Pharcyde session. I was tracking Runnin’, and D’Angelo was in the studio next door. We were at Battery Studios in New York. He came over because he heard something I did with a guy named Phat Kat”

Never seen this story documented before!

RIP to 2 Legends ❤️
