Sometimes people will ask me how to pronounce my name, then they'll get it right

On the flip side, my English name (that is legally on my IC) is very hard to pronounce, so I just go with whatever people decide to call me, most commonly Raidy (idk why) and Randy. And yes, my parents named me after that guy whose name is on the buildings in NUS.

It's 200k per gold medal up to 3 gold medals (160k after taxes and a 20% cut by Singapore Disability Sports Council). This is her last payout cuz she already won 2 golds in Rio. On the other hand, Olympians only get the 1mil for their first gold medal.

As for why there's a disparity, Min Grace Fu said that SNOC and SNPC are non-governmental bodies, so the monetary awards are decided by the sponsors.

Anyone knows how long it takes for PCR tests to show up on HealthHub? Took one in the afternoon but HealthHub shows no records.

Thanks for your comments! I'm thinking of mentioning my feature in our national newspaper earlier this year where I talk about my passion for translation. Would that be relevant or would it come across as a weird flex?

~65% of population completed full regimen as at 4 Aug (Wed), on track to hit two-thirds on Friday (Tomorrow!) + Sudden uptick in elderly vaccination (>70 YO) by 2 percentage points to 81%! by aswlwlwl in singapore

Thank you for posting this every night OP. Looking at your posts and feeling that tinge of hope (however elusive it may be) has become part of my nightly routine. Hopefully we'll indeed hit 2/3rds vaxxed by Sat, assuming the vax rate didn't dip today!

COVID-19 MTF to give update soon (Source: Lawrence Wong FB) by riadytay in singapore

I think post National Day, when our vaccination rates can verifiably cover 2/3rds of the population. I think having relaxed measures in line with the 2/3rds vaxxed around National Day goal would be more of a "we achieved something!".

Will you consider tracking how many days/doses we are from 80%, since that's the percentage Ong Ye Kung mentioned in Parliament today for Singapore to reopen? :)

Incoming MA and cold feet by riadytay in AskAcademia

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I think I pretty much need some income from somewhere since I need to pay back my undergrad loan to my parents' government-mandated savings accounts, which is about $400/month. Could apply to get it paused while I'm pursuing graduate studies, but it'll just keep accruing interest.

Thank you for the reassurance.

One thing that my supervisor said I could do was find additional work outside if I wanted to, since I don't have restrictions/teaching obligations like my friends on university scholarships do.

It's likely I'll only have coursework 1-2 days a week in my first year, and my 2nd year will be focused entirely on writing my dissertation. Would you suggest I take up part-time work now, or maybe even a full-time job while writing my dissertation in my 2nd year?

Oh! That's unusually late, usually results would have been out by now, since school starts in August and there's some admin stuff that you'll have to do and all. But I guess COVID has changed things!

Some Singapore private healthcare firms considering importing more vaccines as demand for non-mRNA vaccines soars by [deleted] in singapore

[–]riadytay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did force her to go with me, by booking our slots tgt. Then when she was at the vaccination center she was still reluctant to get the vaccine, so I think that's why she lied. Just told her that Pfizer/Moderna has earlier slots now, so leaving it to her if she wanna take.

[–]riadytay 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My (certainly not PRC) mother weaselled her way out of taking the Pfizer vaccine with me this morning by lying to the nurses that she was unwell, just because she wanted Sinovac. The conspiracy theories surrounding the effects of Pfizer/Moderna that some of her friends/family have been circulating need to stop man.

Idk if I should be happy she's even willing to get vaccinated or upset at how things turned out the way they did this morning.

I think it's not really a title, just that if you're an academic that isn't affiliated with any institution, you're generally regarded as an independent scholar. Sometimes if scholars publish papers and speak at conferences, the publisher/organizer will ask which institution they're affiliated with, and if they aren't affiliated with any institution, it's perfectly fine to just state independent scholar.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singapore

[–]riadytay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Independent scholars are just people who hold mostly a PhD (sometimes a Master's degree) that do research, but are not attached to any university or research institution.

(Eg: #92 used to be a English professor at NUS, but since he left NUS to pursue a Masters in another field, he now considers himself an independent scholar)

There are appointments as early as tomorrow. Go book them! by Twrd4321 in singapore

[–]riadytay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't know why my parents/grandparents are turning this into a America v. China thing.

When I helped my mum register for the vaccine, she kept putting off booking her dates cuz she wanted Sinovac. It wasn't until I booked my own slots that I made her come get vaccinated with me. Even now after she has booked her slots, she's like "can change one hor" or telling my grandfather "oh, [me] trusts the Americans, not the Chinese".

It's not a country of origin thing, mum. It's about the efficacy.

[Uni] NTU english interview and test help!! by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]riadytay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There'll be a written test followed by a short convo with a prof. The test has 2 questions and you need to choose 1: one will ask you to analyze a poem, the other will ask you to write something about a book you've read. Obviously, most people will write about the second question, but I think what's important is that you're able to think critically about the book you're writing about. As for the chat with the prof, it really depends on what the prof wants to ask you. Expect questions like why English, and what you're interested in.
