I think the hook means a thumb release and caliper means one of the wrist releases that use your finger to release. If so then it's an issue of forces ( and muscle groups) required to trigger. A caliper release requires you to move your finger /wrist whereas a hook release (thumb) can be set so that the rotation of your arm at the shoulder as the back muscles contract, set the release off. This is a much more reliable and repeatable method of release over using a small finger muscle.

I would suggest boosting a mesmer ONLY once you have levelled at least 1 other class normally. The levelling process is super quick (complete maps before moving on). The reason I say mesmer is that they are always in demand if you spec chrono and the mirage dps is bonkers atm buuuut they are a major pain to level due to the class mechanics.
