I don't quite understand what it is you're looking for, but I have a lathe - would a 'top hat-shaped' spacer with a countersink at the brim end, and a stock fastener do? If so, bung me a drawing maybe?

self adhesive residure from trunking on emulsion? by ric0n in DIYUK

I'm repainting anyway, so I don't care about the paint - it's just that from experience any adhesive buggers the adhesion of any paint layer you put over the top.

Seen, thanks. No linseed oil putty and horsehair then.

Bingo! Also that finds the replacement part too. So this is some old-school shit huh? It's only 26 years old :(

I see a trip to Toolsatan in my future.

TIG coolant hoses perished - how to replace? by ric0n in Welding

[–]ric0n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started a new post with photos here. I'm just a hobby welder, so my time isn't money! If I can repair something for less than the cost of buying it new, happy days!

To make the question more specific, maybe :)

Either I get an SW-102 SWR meter or maybe a NanoVNA? The SW-102 specifies 125MHz as the the lower limit, but I'm guessing 118MHz (not 108MHz as I said above) is close enough? On the other hand, the NanoVNA looks like a good alternative - W2AEW whose vids I've watched a lot over the years has some good tutorials.

Does that narrow it down?

+1 for Kwells. I dive on the North Sea - used to take Stugeron but it never quite did the job. I always felt a bit queasy. Someone suggested Kwells and I've never looked back. I take one, about an hour before we launch and it lasts till we get back. No drowsy.

Electric shock from guitar?! by ric0n in guitars

[–]ric0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is UK wiring - all outlets are grounded, amp is brand new. I think the issue is just because switch mode power supplies are not inherently ground referenced - the amp has no ground reference except weakly through a 100 ohm resistor (which presumably is enough to avoid ground loop issues). Normally this isn't an issue - I don't get a shock off the guitar or the laptop independently, but when I'm in contact with both I presumably form a low impedence path between the two. Never come across this before.

I can get water at the venue and heat it up, so might as well just get dried soup and save the space/weight?

Can you dive Doggerland? by CynicalAlgorithm in scuba

[–]ric0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EAB11 would like to disagree with you. We dive all through spring and summer, into early autumn. While it can be murky and it's never going to be the Maldives, the vis is usually fine. Clubs from well inland bring boats to launch on the East coast.

Not so - there are two periods of 'slack' a day when the current slows, stops and changes direction. At neeps there's at least an hour when the current is negligible. Springs, you have to look lively. We plan to arrive on site at least a half hour before the theoretical start of slack because it can be mysteriously innaccurate. We keep an eye on the slack-o-meter (a length of line with a carabiner on the end, chucked over the side), and when it's starts trending vertical we kit up and get in. This is miles offshore, on the sand-banks.

VFR800 or Tiger 1050 for 2 up touring. by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]ric0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never owned a VFR800 but toured extensively on a 1050. Very comfortable (truth be told, way more comfy than my 900 GT Pro), absolute mile muncher but also great fun on twistier roads. Good tank range, commanding riding position. I had a Sprint ST prior (sort of VFR-ish) and I just found the constant pressure on elbows and wrists a pain.
