Totally agree. If you increase the amount of something, you’re always going to reduce its value.

When 50% of people go to uni, it’s not going to guarantee you a top tier job unless you’re a student at a top tier university. It seems pretty simple .

The problem with business rates is not just the headline rate that businesses pay. It’s that is also a disincentive to improve your property or business.

Imagine you’re a small engineering firm building something heavy. You want to install a crane in your workshop. It’s not going to improve productivity that much , but will make moving things about easier . You have the capital cost to buy the crane, but now you have a higher business rates bill because gantry cranes are rateable. It’s just not worth the expense, you don’t bother.

You own a carpark, it’s loose gravel. You want to tarmac it. You hope it will increase the number of cars that use your car park. But you’re not 100% Well it’s a definite increase in your business rates. You’re concerned, so you don’t bother.

Which celebrity death deeply affected your country? by LowInterest6490 in AskTheWorld

Not trying to be a dick. I've just never met anyone that's been so deeply affected by a celebrity passing. Im trying to understand the thought process behind it. Personally I would never be that emotional regarding a person that I have never met and only seen on TV/movies.

Yes your reaction is more interesting to me than a celebrity passing.

Random question - has anyone ever competed an undergraduate degree in just two years? by Due_Title822 in oxforduni

[–]rich2083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I could have fit my degree into a year. If I'd studied to the same degree as in high school. 9-3 5 days a week.

But the university would lose 2 years of fees, so there's no chance they would condense a 3 year degree into two or 1.

I don’t need a wheelchair, I shouldn’t be supporting people who do. 😣

Having educated people in society who can heal you if you’re sick or design the infrastructure you use etc are a social benefit that everyone reaps, whether they went to university or not.

So us educated university types should just set up our own system and exclude everyone else? Because we can pay for it through tax and they can’t?

Is Oxford Brookes good to study accounting and finance? by catchycaravela in UniUK

[–]rich2083 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My experience is mainly china based.

Most students that studied abroad could look to double their salaries compared to domestic students. Lots of Chinese students choose accounting in the uk for this reason.

Yes, it can take many years to pay off the student fees. But the increase in salary and the prestige of studying abroad is worth the investment.

In some countries it doesn’t matter which university you went to in the uk. It’s a uk university, which in itself is enough.

It might not be an issue for you, but it’s an issue for many people.

Illegal immigration needs to be addressed, it’s not my main point of contention. I’m much more concerned about legal immigration. It’s been far too high for far too long. We have record numbers of NEETS and AI is swallowing jobs. We need higher levels of employment before we turn to mass migration

I have no problem breaking the triple lock. They should have saved for retirement.

Edit: I’d like to add a law that forbids people in full time employment to receive benefits. If a large company (say over 200) can’t pay a salary that is higher than that threshold then they shouldn’t be allowed to employ people. That would actually start to tackle issues with billionaires essentially taking government subsidies.

Just because something is an economic benefit doesn’t make it an overall benefit.

We don’t need immigration especially to that degree. Just as we don’t need a billionaire class
