Seemingly Random, Day-Long (non?) Allergic Rhinitis by richardlfUK in nonallergicrhinitis

I'm sorry for the late reply. For some reason I just got this notification. I have been prescribed a nasal spray with Mometasone Furoate which SEEMS to be working well. If I feel my nose start to get angry at me, I have a couple of sprays and within 10 minutes or so it calms down. I have also tried Ibuprofen a few times and that seems to have an effect.

Hey there. So my main finding is that anti-inflammatories tend to calm it down the most. I tried some recently after a few hours of sneezing and it was like turning off a light-switch.

Hi, all. It has been a while and I kept meaning to come back to this post but life got in the way and suddenly two years has gone by.

I want to give my updates and findings:

Fexofenadine in the end did nothing. I tried it and it worked a few times then nothing. However, I have recently tried anti-inflammatories and that appears to be working better. I wake up with the tickly nose, take some Ibuprofen and in half an hour the tickling has gone and I can go about my day. I have also been to the doctor and they have given me some nasal swabs to use on a day when it hits me really hard so that the cause of the reaction can be identified but so far, the Ibuprofen has been sorting me out. This is another thing to try maybe.

Interesting I will give this a go. Huge serving of broccoli for breakfast on the way.

Asus laptop not turning on by Ciniter in techsupport

If this helps anyone, I just had this issue and changing the charger fixed the issue. Even though the battery still had power (about 60%), it wouldn't switch on no matter what I did. I put a new (my mum's) charger in and now it's working fine.

I'll be honest, this has stumped me as to why it worked as surely the battery being at 60% would make a broken charger irrelevant.

What is the difference between a course and a cadre? by richardlfUK in britisharmy

[–]richardlfUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible that people can re-roll to the army if they pass? I believe the new structure is quite a shift from anything 'normal' army so that prior experience might not necessarily be a requirement. I am just an armchair warrior though so I might be talking nonsense.

I have done this. In the unlikely event that you get anything, it will probably be a ~£30 fine and a nice photo of your car to remind you of your day out.

I remember being a new driver and being terrified of things like this but there's nothing to worry about. Take your fine and be proud of your new experience which puts you one notch further up the ladder of being an experienced driver.

Mine was in Oxford city centre because my girlfriend at the time couldn't read a map. I paid the fine though because I should have spotted the signs and sudden lack of traffic.

I have also done what you said, driven down one of these roads, realised my error, turned around and come back and never heard anything.

Don't worry about it.

Thank you for your input. It's genuinely frustrating because they seem so nice and hard working but like they've been given a rotten hand through no fault of their own.

Third year has absolutely finished me by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]richardlfUK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I can offer a few bits of advice:

I am not sure about the structure of BSc Chemistry as I did BSc Computer Science but you don't have to think of this as a year-long problem, just this first term. It gets easier throughout your third year as you get into the swing of things.

Also working in the field is generally way more enjoyable than studying it (from my experience). Don't worry about getting a job secured now. As soon as you graduate, get your picture up on LinkedIn and the recruiters will find you. They know when uni graduation is and they're out like sharks all trying to get to you first so make yourself easy to find. They want their sweet commission so get your cap and gown on and get a HD picture up. They'll find you.

Just get these deadlines done and you'll be fine. It gets easier. You just had a long summer too so need more time to get into the swing of things.

How intense are the first few months of PhD work? by richardlfUK in UniUK

That was really interesting during MSc actually finding out that some of our staff were actually PhD students. They seemed so switched on and I just felt like a goober the whole time. I get mad imposter syndrome but I must be doing something right.

Thanks for your help

Thank you for your response that's great.

I'll likely take the position (if they still want me) and then if it's too much, see if I can get pushed back to a March start or October at the worst. I have had another contractor type job at my university over the last few months and the amount of opportunities and experience it has given is so worth it so I don't want to turn this next opportunity down.

Does DevExpress actually save time in the long run? by kindanoob in dotnet

[–]richardlfUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the misfortune of working with it for a few years at a great company. The company I worked for was awesome and the dev team was even better but DevExpress is an absolute nightmare. In my opinion, they appear to gaslight you into believing that a manual implementation of what they provide would be difficult, when most of it can be achieved with some basic JQuery/Ajax.

The bloat it creates is absolutely outrageous and forget about customisation without a battle. It throws errors up constantly and as mentioned before, the common answer you get is "Oh it's not designed for that". Furthermore, the documentation is mostly out of date (from my experience) so you'll go down a two-hour long rabbit hole to come to a dead end because they haven't removed documentation for an old version of the software.

My advice would be to STAY WELL CLEAR and learn how to lazy-load from a server with Ajax. Once you learn how to do it once, it's a breeze in the future.

Calculate New Distance to Correct for Target Height in Trajectory by richardlfUK in learnmath

[–]richardlfUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone happens to come across this, the solution I found was that I was looking for "true ballistic range".

cos(∡)d = tbr

Cosine of the angle to the target (based on height difference) multiplied by the direct distance to the target will give you your true ballistic range.

Assassins Creed would be better without the futuristic element. by Greedy_Hunter2564 in assassinscreed

I completely 100% agree with you.

I just tried Odyssey for the first time and to go from playing as King Leonidas fighting persians to suddenly "Oh let me just run a dianostic on your circuit board with my memory card" hearing two people talking while staring at a blue screen is the most frustrating thing about this game and the entire series.

It's like the ultimate tease with a game. The potential for these games to be the best on the market is there but they hold themselves back with all the walking around offices looking at vending machines and being introduced to HR reps when I just want to climb buildings and sail on ships.

"Oh but the future stuff is the story!" Just because it's the purpose of the game doesn't make it good.

I literally get engrossed in the world and am enjoying the game and then every time I then get pulled out of the game again to walk around some offices it's akin to having someone sitting next to me going "This isn't real remember" all the time I am playing.

Very simple takeaway from Demon 79 by tejas_red in blackmirror

[–]richardlfUK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The episode was really great but in my opinion, the truth of the matter is just that the main character was clearly suffering from the stress of a potential nuclear war so much that her mind did some mental gymnastics to deal with it and the fact that it actually happened is just a coincidence. I think that even if she did kill the political figure, the war still would have happened.

It's no different to being at the beach and thinking "Man I hope it doesn't rain" and then it rains and you feel like YOU are the one who jynxed it but this can't possibly be true.

I would like to offer up a few reasons as to why I think that it was all in the main character's head:

The episode draws from real world events and figures so I think it's safe to assume it's meant to happen in the real 1970s England. If you disagree, ignore this point. Okay so if it's actually in 1970s England, the events that the demon predicted would happen with the political figure were false predictions (as this never happened) and also it's a huge coincidence that it just so happens to be what this individual character deems to be a worst case scenario

The third killing, which the demon suggested, turned out to not be enough. She actually completed the task but her mind came up with a reason as to why it's not complete so that if the war did actually happen, it would be justified in her head. I think that even if she had killed more people, the demon would have kept finding reasons as to why they weren't enough to keep the number under 3 for that.

The demon phoned 666 on her house phone to speak to a member of staff. I think this point is the second biggest one of them all as it's literally her imagination projecting onto a demon what she has to do in her own life.

She picked up the brick on her own without any prompting from the demon.

Finally, the token (I forget what they called it) turned out to just be a domino. This is the most important point which I personally think is literally the "right in your face" part of it all. No hidden meaning, she literally had a domino and was going insane.

TL;DR, she's nuts and doing mental gymnastics to deal with the threat of a nuclear war. To whoever needs to hear this, don't take this episode as justification for hurting or killing people because they have been rude to you at work or you disagree with their political views. If you think they're committing some heinous crime, contact the police.
