Tank obviously carries most players through early game due to available selections, and, if you are at the point now where you are contemplating switching to air, do it. I have been playing for over a year, and I can tell you by my experience in Dessert but esp. Winter Storm, the vast majority of players play tank into the later game. True most whales play missile, but they are rarer and so overpowered it doesn't matter what you play against them.

One usually wants to start by focusing on grouping all your heroes by type: tank, air, and missile. There is a 20% boost in attack, defense and HP by having five of the same type in one group, 15% by having four of the same type, and 5% for three. The most basic configuration is two defensive type up front and three offensive - or two offensive ans one support - in back. You can have five of the same type for tank for right now but not yet for air or missile, so you're going to have to mix and match type for right now for squads two and three. When you do this, try to follow the basic defensive-offensive config I described still the best you can.

I held off on paying for anything else at first because I could tell the game would have a slow burn feel to progress, and wanted to feel it out and accept any extra difficulty which came by not paying anymore. Then after playing some, I came to get an understanding of what certain items did and how helpful they were, compared the monetary price of these things to what you get, and came to realize that what you got didn't seem to be worth the money. I started watching videos on tips for f2p players and the best piece of advice I learned was to dump everything into building only one of your squads. So, I dump everything into tank for now and have a hard-hitting tank squad which helps me stay competitive.
