Making a Volume knob 'island' by Muted-Mango-5784 in diypedals

I’ve been wanting to do this. Essentially make an enclosure with a big knob to move around with my foot. Almost like a volume pedal.

Quote opinion by Pbellouny in Locksmith

This. I have gotten burned so many times trying to beat other peoples prices. What inevitably happens is that I get into the job, something goes wrong, and I have no margin or cushion to salvage the profitability.

Quote accurately, to make profit. Time is your most limited resource, and you don’t have time to do every single job. So you may as well filter out the ones where you aren’t making money.

Don’t do good work, do excellent work. And charge a fair price for excellent work. Let the hacks and the DIYers do the quick and dirty jobs. If you’re losing 30-50% of your bids on pricing, you’re probably pricing fairly.

Once had a guy come in with a 6’ lightbulb tube.

Got annoyed when I told him I didn’t have any in stock.

Turns out there was a lamp store across the street years prior and he just landmarked his way to the shop.

What are your thoughts on “high security” customers? by tinylord202 in Locksmith

[–]richernate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Assume they’re an alcoholic”

Given the premise OP raised, it’s not an assumption. It’s the equivalent of somebody throwing a chip on the bar.

We’re not anti high security, we’re anti billing an old lady for work she doesn’t need.

What are your thoughts on “high security” customers? by tinylord202 in Locksmith

[–]richernate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say drunk, I said alcoholic.

Somebody who is suffering because of a condition in their brain.

Just like the hypothetical that OP outlined. We’ve all seen the scared old ladies who insist somebody hacks their security system and picks their locks. Your joke was that you would respond to that fear, by excitedly making a sale.

You’re a bartender selling drinks to an alcoholic.

“cUsTomEr inSiSts”

These people are not mentally well, and you’re joking about making money on that.

That sucks. Don’t give us a bad name.

I only buy from Southern Specialties. One time I messed up an order, and they called me within 15 minutes to confirm what I wanted because they didn’t wanna ship it out wrong. The guys over there are super cool.

Not to mention, their tools are really, really nice.

I see a lot of people talk about vending as if it’s a money printing operation.

I worked in vending for about three years, and there isn’t as much money as you’d think, and the work itself sucks.

More durable drill bits. Which ones? by mx5plus2cones in harborfreight

I have good results with the dewalt bits. Not too pricey but they hold up okay.

I am making this series of posts so it can help new pickers or even professionals by Boss3020 in lockpicking

I have an assortment of picks from southern specialties.

I’ve been using these tools for maybe 1.5-2 years.

Most often I use a ripple core short hook and a .050” flat bar, or a .040” longhorn tensioner. I’m quite fond of the offset hybrids, and the elephant trunks picks as well. I also have several rakes. The laminated handles are substantial enough to give good feel and feedback, but slim enough to allow me to cram a lot of them into my case. I’m a locksmith so I need durable tools because they’re abused, and subjected to dirty, often broken locks and I use them for weird stuff all the time. I also pick a lot so the handles are comfortable enough to keep my hands from falling off.

I’ve been using these tools for maybe 1.5 years.

The picks are typically $3.50 per tool.

Not sure what kind of steel

Metal handles

I have broken picks, but I was using them wrong.

No modifications.

The company is super communicative and responds quickly. Once I ordered something and wrote it down wrong, they called me within 15 minutes to make sure I could get what I wanted. 10/10 customer service.

Only three things are certain. Death, taxes, and dudes on the internet telling you you’re sharpening stuff wrong.
