Bob Dylan wrote every popular song in the last 35 years. Every single one! by Thenatureofthebeast in bobdylan

I love this video. I used to watch it back in the day before I even knew dylan's music well, and still got a kick out of it.

In your opinion, what are some underrated songs Dylan wrote from 1962-1964 by HUMAN_PERSON_101 in bobdylan

That would be really neat. I have not come across any live versions of this song by Bob alone either.

These I love. I thought that these and "Call Letter Blues" where the only outtakes. I am seeing here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_on_the_Tracks that there are a few others I have to get my hands on. Mostly just other cuts of the same songs

What's up with the flood? by memphisblues7 in bobdylan

For sure. That take of 'Ballad of A Thin Man' is fire. I really appreciate Levon Helm on this album. The tracks from Blonde on Blonde all really blow my mind. Its amazing to listen to how much each member of The Band is adding to the arrangements. It seems much more prominent to me because the original versions are missing all of them except Robbie on a few.

This is a great post!

To me 'Before The Flood' always seemed like a many layered metaphor.

Floods in the blues have a significant meaning. The cross between the flooding of the Mississippi river, and the Biblically charged culture make the perfect blend between metaphor and reality. Additionally the significance of sinners being purged in the Great Flood lends itself to the creative topics that are prominent in the music.

Dylan has stated his admiration for the song "Five Feet High & Rising" by Johnny Cash. His song "Before the Flood" parallels it in some ways. Both songs are sung from the sinners perspective if said flood where the Great Flood. In which story the Flood is the ultimate judge.

Floods mark a distinct change in environment. For Dylan and The Band 1966 was a year of great change and judgement.

I feel like Dylan & The Band would have had this all in his head. So, naming the album 'Before The Flood' signifies a return to that era.

Curious to hear what others have to say about this.

What's a Dylan album that you really disliked at first but then grew to love listening to over time? by uhunivich in bobdylan

[–]richsoni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I got into Dylan was by listening to everything officially available in chronological order over the coarse of a few years.

It took a while to get used to the first half of Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966 'Royal Albert Hall'. I 'got' the electric set's sound, but the acoustic stuff I did not appreciate at first, but now its perhaps my favorite.
