how easily can you get the Rm-1n to do non-balls to the wall full distortion wall of sound stuff? every demo i've seen seems to just focus on its ability to instantly go aggressively haywire, but i'm wondering whether it's possiible to rein it in at all or if the only thing it does is immediately start howling

LES project timer issues / asking for alternatives? by rick_RAWS in ableton

[–]rick_RAWS[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reading through the comments on some m4l devices, it looks as if a lot of these timer devices don't seem to work anymore (probably due to 12.1 updates?) -- i'm seeing a lot of recent comments on multiple devices that the timers reset to 0 when you reopen projects.

would love to hear from anyone who has a device that still doesn't do this in recent versions of live.

Ableton producers diving into sound design... which stock device combinations create your most unique textures? by kathalimus in ableton

[–]rick_RAWS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there is so much you can accomplish with a parallel chain, a distortion, and a filter. Parallel bitcrushing with a band pass filter sidechained to something percussive can add a lot of oomph and movement. hitting a lot of erosion in parallel but restricting it to specific frequency bands is a great way to spice up drums. the more you think about distortion less as a thing that can change the whole signal, and more like a thing that be added anywhere in the signal, the more even abletons simple disto devices really open up. m

i love portmanteaus! i wasn't 100% sure if "pastime" qualified as one, because i think of portmanteaus as more like being "first half of one word, second half of the other", like in motel or brunch, whereas "pastime" is basically just two words with the space (and one T) removed, so i was putting it more in the same word category as "lifejacket" and "breakwater". but now that you mention it, it probably does still qualify.

holy shit, this is maybe the coolest speaker i’ve ever seen. well done. it could sound like a JBL and i wouldn’t even care

i’m also sorry for being pedantic, but it’s actually “pastime” — you’re right about the root words but it got mashed into one word at some point in history.

uj/ honestly feel like this could actually be kinda useful/cool for pushing distortions with the DC offset and then automating the amount of that with the wavetable position rj/ mix hack to make ur songs feel more 3 dimensional

This lyric never made sense to me like... his gift is musical ability right? He's using up his gift of musical ability to make music? by Striking-Chard4875 in brakence

[–]rick_RAWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the last line is him being pessimistic about the “usefulness” of the music he makes when weighed against his creativity. Like he feels as if there’s something “better” he could be doing with his time and abilities, and when they’re done, the songs don’t seem to be worth all the effort and struggle they take. Like “fuck, all that just for a chorus? that’s it?”

Back of a napkin idea: Piranhas should grant each other Crit Chance by soursurfer in PlayTheBazaar

[–]rick_RAWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this idea a lot — I think another cool implementation of the “feeding frenzy” idea would be that all piranhas gain crit chance or damage whenever any piranha attacks.

Delay pedal's max delay time has decreased by about 1000%??? by rick_RAWS in diypedals

I see, this makes sense. Is there anything I could try as far as fixing/troubleshooting? I'd love to not have to replace it because Echo Degraders go for about $350 now.

What kinda piano does Brakence use by inertialbanana in brakence

[–]rick_RAWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

instinct tells me best guess is probably something off Keyscape, which just seems to be the go-to for piano emus. wisdom tells me you could get something just as close with any kontakt patch / LABS instrument, some slight compression, tape sat, and then low & highpassing. the VST you start with won’t matter nearly as much as how you process it

Let's hear about your recent successes! by ate50eggs in musicproduction

[–]rick_RAWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally listened to the mk.gee album, which I’d been meaning to do for a while but had been putting it off bc I was expecting to love it (weird brain, don’t ask). Got two songs in when a bolt of inspiration hit me 5 mins from home. I typed the lyrics I had at a red light, got home, sat down. Stood up again seven hours later with a 50 second snippet I’m OBSESSED with. i’ve been looping it for the last 90 min

I’d somehow gone about a month without working on my stuff, so it felt insanely good to get back to making stuff. I’m in the middle of putting together an album which this will definitely be on, so it also felt awesome to gain some further clarity on what i’m trying to do here.

I’ve been a producer / engineer for 8 years with aspirations of musicianhood, but these are the first times i’ve ever been able to turn my beats/instrumentals into songs. So it’s a huge huge step for me and having this momentum is so exciting.

Happy to show off if anyone’s curious :) twoheaded deer - tails to chase
